Taimate stud owner and breeder Paul Hickman credits his wife, Nadine, and team behind the scenes, and admits the celebrations went well into the early hours.

“Not too many hours on the pillow, you might say,” Hickman said.

“I’m extremely proud; you couldn’t overstate it.

“He was just an outstandingly good bull in every way you could possibly think of an animal.

“From his pedigree to his performance on paper, that was exceptional like nothing before him, and then in the pens and in the paddock he was just an exceptionally all-round bull.”

The 850kg sire is headed to a renowned stud which Hickman said is a huge achievement.

The successful buyer was Gisborne’s Tangihau Stud owner Dean McHardy who travelled from the East Coast to bid for the prized bull.

“There might have been 300-odd people there,” McHardy said.

“There were people outside who couldn’t get into the room because there was such a good line-up of bulls.

“Commercial bulls and stud, these bulls were just rocketing away.”

McHardy joked he’d hoped the bidding might stop a little sooner.

That’s because he relinquished his own national price record, set last year when Tangihau Angus U418 sold for $161,000 during the East Coast bull sales week.

“This particular bull has unbelievable data,” McHardy said.

“It’s going to really blend in well with the Tangihau programme.

“He’s a stud bull so we were pretty keen to secure him, so that’s where he ended up.

“I slowed down at the end hoping it was going to stop before that point [before the record was taken], but that’s the value of the bull.

“He’s made a record, and I’m happy with that.”

He flew back home to Gisborne to get his own operation shipshape in time for their own sale on Monday.

And does he have a sire to rival the one he’s just bought?

“The East Coast sales are next week starting on Monday, so maybe the record will go again,” McHardy said.

“It’s up to the public to work out if they’re good enough.

“There’s a good sort of line-up of bulls, and there are a few stud bulls in them.

“We don’t know what price they will reach, but you need two studs bidding on them to get the high prices.”

Taimate stud owner and breeder Paul Hickman credits his wife, Nadine, and team behind the scenes, and admits…

[5
242872,21149,22947,138,16256,83727,3556,117,111,139,69,37250,1974,1133,1973,102
post-483707","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-242872","tag-angus","tag-bull","tag-business","tag-marlborough","tag-miles","tag-national","tag-new","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-penny","tag-record","tag-sale","tag-sets","tag-with
["GET
