(Image credit: ESA\/DLR\/FU Berlin)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4f13618e-e708-46d3-8e89-8ce39623dc81\">It&#8217;s always a treat to be reminded that we have spacecraft orbiting <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-redirect=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/47-mars-the-red-planet-fourth-planet-from-the-sun.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/solar-system\/mars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> right now, and a new image from one of these Red Planet probes does just that.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a>&#8216;s (ESA) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18206-mars-express.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18206-mars-express.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18206-mars-express.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars Express<\/a> has beamed to Earth a beautiful view of a region on Mars known as Mamers Valles. This is a sweeping valley system that stretches <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/photojournal\/pj-mamers-valles-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/photojournal\/pj-mamers-valles-16\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">across<\/a> nearly 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) of land. And if your day is feeling a little dry, there&#8217;s a little game you can play while looking at the image.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4f13618e-e708-46d3-8e89-8ce39623dc81-2\">I spy 30 dust devils hidden in the crevices of these Martian valleys.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"max-h-12 w-auto\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><a id=\"elk-3da7a8be-c3d1-4322-9677-e19a13fbfa32\"\/>What are we looking at?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-3610ac3d-9377-437b-b5c1-3ac7835a9c91\">Dust devils are basically small tornadoes that pick up dust as they whirl around. They&#8217;re common on Earth and on Mars: Rovers and orbiters have imaged these phenomena many times on the Red Planet. One time, for instance, a mission team <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/european-mars-orbiters-red-planet-dust-devils-map\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/european-mars-orbiters-red-planet-dust-devils-map\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/european-mars-orbiters-red-planet-dust-devils-map\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tracked<\/a> about 1,000 of them speeding across the Red Planet. Another time, NASA&#8217;s Perseverance rover <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/mars-rovers\/nasas-perseverance-rover-watches-as-2-mars-dust-devils-merge-into-1-video\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/mars-rovers\/nasas-perseverance-rover-watches-as-2-mars-dust-devils-merge-into-1-video\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/mars-rovers\/nasas-perseverance-rover-watches-as-2-mars-dust-devils-merge-into-1-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">watched<\/a> two of these devils merge into one large devil. We&#8217;ve even <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/hear-dust-devils-on-mars-crackle-with-electricity-in-new-nasa-perseverance-rover-video\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/hear-dust-devils-on-mars-crackle-with-electricity-in-new-nasa-perseverance-rover-video\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/mars\/hear-dust-devils-on-mars-crackle-with-electricity-in-new-nasa-perseverance-rover-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heard them<\/a> &#8220;crackle&#8221; before, thanks to another Perseverance video.<\/p>\n<p>Mars&#8217; dust devils are far larger than those of Earth, reaching heights of almost 5 miles (8 km) and sometimes racing at speeds of about 148 feet (45 meters) per second.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>In the image below, you can see the full picture of the valleys; the devils, ESA says, are small yellow dots with pinkish trailing shadows. (Image credit: ESA\/DLR\/FU Berlin)<a id=\"elk-64b01354-e332-4179-8f8e-ce254b43eef2\"\/>Why is it noteworthy?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ab7d46b5-63c2-4bfa-856e-77573eb63d15\">Scientists are so interested in Martian dust devils because they help <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Mars_Express\/Dancing_dust_devils_trace_raging_winds_on_Mars\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Mars_Express\/Dancing_dust_devils_trace_raging_winds_on_Mars\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">map<\/a> the planet&#8217;s otherwise invisible wind. That can aid in future Mars mission planning as well as helping researchers decode the general Red Planet environment\u2014 information that could lead to discoveries about Mars&#8217; watery past or its evolution through time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>But besides dust devils, the region depicted in the image, Mamers Valles, is worth admiring, too.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to its vastness, Mamers Valles actually connects Mars&#8217; ancient southern highlands with its northern lowlands, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Mars_Express\/Dozens_of_dust_devils_hidden_in_plain_sight\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Mars_Express\/Dozens_of_dust_devils_hidden_in_plain_sight\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to an ESA statement<\/a>. Plus, all around the valleys of this 3.8-billion-year-old area lie many other land features \u2014 including what used to be full-on glaciers.
