Conley said DOC had a comprehensive monitoring programme that guided regulatory changes \u201cand helps us to focus our efforts and efficiently deliver a world-class, wild trout fishery\u201d.<\/p>\n
He told NZME this included acoustic monitoring to look at plankton and smelt populations \u2013 the basis of trout food sources. <\/p>\n
He said recent monitoring suggested low productivity in those populations, meaning less food for the current trout population.<\/p>\n
This would lead to reduced fish size and condition, regardless of the number of trout in the lake, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cRaising the bag limit allows anglers to keep more fish, reducing pressure on the available food resource.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other tools used to understand the fishery include escapement counts, angler surveys, and monitoring fish traps on selected spawning streams. <\/p>\n
Conley said in the media release that some changes reflected feedback from the angling community.<\/p>\n
The fixed February closure at Lake Otamangakau would be replaced by a more responsive approach.<\/p>\n
Weather patterns would be monitored and closure decisions based on heat risk to trout.<\/p>\n
Fly-only restrictions had also been relaxed at the underutilised Otaketake and Waitetoko stream mouths, and soft-bait regulations \u201cstreamlined\u201d.<\/p>\n
Conley said fishing regulations were designed to protect the future of the \u201cfishery we love\u201d.<\/p>\n
Fisheries rangers would be out on rivers and lakes making sure everyone followed the rules.<\/p>\n
