A Northern Rescue spokesman said the worker suffered a “serious medical event” around 3.30pm on Thursday at the former refinery, now Channel Infrastructure, at the entrance to Whang\u0101rei Harbour.<\/p>\n
A helicopter was dispatched to the scene with plans of winching the man out of the large, empty fuel storage tank.<\/p>\n
The tank, which had no roof, was 15-20 metres deep.<\/p>\n
When the helicopter arrived, rescuers had already established ground-level access to the tank.<\/p>\n
The helicopter was unable to land next to the tank so a winch was used to drop two critical care paramedics onto a nearby road.<\/p>\n
The helicopter then landed in a designated area at the port.<\/p>\n
The paramedics worked on the patient alongside St John Ambulance personnel before he was flown in a critical condition to Whang\u0101rei Hospital.<\/p>\n
A spokeswoman for Channel Infrastructure said the man suffered a medical event while working in the tank.<\/p>\n
The tank was disused, and not one being upgraded to increase the nation’s fuel reserves.<\/p>\n
A St John spokesman said a rapid response unit, an ambulance and am operations manager responded.<\/p>\n
Fire crews from the Ruak\u0101k\u0101 and Whang\u0101rei brigades responded because the callout was initially coded as being due to a hazardous substance.<\/p>\n
