{"id":486217,"date":"2026-06-20T00:05:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T00:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/486217\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T00:05:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T00:05:10","slug":"whanganui-start-up-helps-find-realistic-ways-to-curb-phone-addiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/486217\/","title":{"rendered":"Whanganui start-up helps find realistic ways to curb phone addiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201c[I\u2019d be] checking my emails &#8230; constantly, even though there\u2019s nothing that I\u2019m expecting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Even with things he considered \u201cmore productive\u201d, he fell into the same addiction pattern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI could read the Guardian website or the BBC website for half an hour, and then if I ask myself 15 minutes later, what the key takeaways of any of those stories were, I wouldn\u2019t be able to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">He was replicating the same activity, scrolling and consuming content without engaging with it, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was just as unproductive as me spending half an hour on Facebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Redford turned to Real Worlders, a start-up founded by Whanganui\u2019s Ellen Young that is developing \u201creal-world\u201d solutions to digital distraction. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">It\u2019s not anti-tech. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">It promotes intentional use of technology where people pick their own boundaries and Real Worlders helps them stick to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI got frustrated with the problem being talked about all the time and no one ever giving anyone a holistic solution,\u201d Young said.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"New Zealand behavioural neuroscientist and speaker Kathryn Berkett said digital distraction was &quot;definitley changing the brain&quot;.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>New Zealand behavioural neuroscientist and speaker Kathryn Berkett said digital distraction was &#8220;definitley changing the brain&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Young began Real Worlders last year after noticing the toll digital distraction was taking on herself and her family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI noticed [I was] zoning out from my kids and that being normalised for them,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">The long-term impact it would have on society concerned her and she became determined to find a \u201crealistic\u201d solution. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">New Zealand behavioural neuroscientist and speaker Kathryn Berkett said two major things happen during screen use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOne is that most activity on a screen activates us into the stress response,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSo when we talk about being slightly frustrated or slightly nervous or slightly anxious, we\u2019ve got a bit of a tension in our body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Berkett said this activated a fight-or-flight response. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen we stay in that state for a long period of time, it can be &#8230; detrimental to our mental health and our physical health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">The second thing is spikes in the body\u2019s dopamine levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Dopamine is the reward chemical in the brain responsible for feelings of pleasure, motivation, mood, attention, memory and important body functions like immune system regulation and sleep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMost device use is made to bring on unpredictable, instant dopamine hits,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOur brain becomes used to having instant, powerful dopamine hits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Activities that create \u201cmore subtle dopamine\u201d, like going for a walk or spending time with friends, then become \u201cdull\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely changing the brain,\u201d Berkett said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe have to talk about it. We have to be honest about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Global studies have increasingly linked the effects of screen addiction to the stark increases in mental health problems globally in the past decade, especially among younger generations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Adolescents who spent more than four hours daily on screens were almost three times as likely to have depression symptoms, and more than twice as likely to show anxiety symptoms than those who spent fewer than four hours on screens, over a two-week period, according to a study published by the United States\u2019 Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">New Zealanders reporting high or very high psychological distress \u2013 including anxiety, depression, or emotional fatigue \u2013 rose by 316.7% for males and 313.2% for females between 2011 and 2025, according to the Ministry of Health New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Ages 15 to 24 had the highest rate, more than double that of the groups aged 34 and older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Young wanted to develop a solution that didn\u2019t rely on self-control. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">She said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/bill-banning-under-16s-from-social-media-put-on-hold-erica-stanford-confirms\/U5MU6VKVV5BMRM4VXAEVR2NHPU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/bill-banning-under-16s-from-social-media-put-on-hold-erica-stanford-confirms\/U5MU6VKVV5BMRM4VXAEVR2NHPU\/\">social media bans<\/a> or blocking apps, easily overridden, weren\u2019t enough on their own and non-smart phones weren\u2019t realistic, lacking the necessary tools for modern life. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cEvery solution is trying to get you to just use your pure self-control to just stop the behaviour. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe need to offer holistic solutions that actually help people escape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Young has a background in philosophy and entrepreneurship and has overseen community projects for Whanganui District Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Community became her solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Real Worlders aims to give people space to share their experiences, rebuild human connection and hold accountability without giving up the benefits of technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Her first cohort of 14 people met in person weekly for seven weeks, learning her three-step approach \u2013 education, blocking tools and \u201clife design\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">People learned about the problem and studied how they used their phones during a typical day. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">They talked about what they would prefer to do in the physical world with the time they spent online, and installed blocking tools to limit certain app use based on their own goals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Redford, who was part of that cohort, has now lowered his phone use from eight hours a day to three and a half.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Whanganui's Carla Standen took part in the first cohort of Real Worlders in 2025 to help her focus more on family time. Photo \/ Erin Smith<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Carla Standen was also in the first cohort and joined the programme so she could learn techniques to pass on to her children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">She didn\u2019t consider herself someone addicted to her phone and was already conscious of digital distraction, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was quite eye-opening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Standen was surprised by how much she unconsciously used her phone for distractive activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI have my children for a short amount of time at home and I want to know that I\u2019ve made the most of our relationship,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Young said she planned to continue developing Real Worlders. She offers courses for businesses and hopes to create one for schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Young is offering a workshop on Sunday, June 28, from 9.30am to 2pm at Article, 20 Drews Ave. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">People can also join the community on the Real Worlders website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBuilding the world is a collective act and it requires everyone.
