The fires were in Gebbies Valley, Hawarden, Mt Culverden, Emu Plain, Waipara \u2013 and Ward in Marlborough. Four crews are currently fighting tree fires at Ward, with four more on the way. <\/p>\n

Forecast rain and lower temperatures are expected to ease the situation tomorrow, Keown said. <\/p>\n

Hurunui District Council has asked residents of Hawarden and Waikari to stop all non-essential water use immediately to help maintain supplies for the firefighting.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to a large fire incident, level-four water restrictions are now in place until further notice,\u201c the council said.<\/p>\n

Hurunui District Mayor Marie Black told the Herald her property is involved in the fire, and she did not know how large it had become. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe wind is blowing and it\u2019s whipped up a recent slash fire,\u201d Black said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been emptying out some things that I wanted to save, in the worst event, in our house. The fire brigades have been working incredibly hard and our house has been protected by that.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a tough day for all our fire volunteers and I just take my hat off to every one of them, they\u2019re just incredible,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

The Canterbury region is experiencing high winds and unseasonably hot weather<\/a> today, with Christchurch temperatures rising to 25C – a record high for June. <\/p>\n

According to MetService, Ashburton reached 23.8C, beating its previous June record of 21.7C in 2024.
