{"id":487472,"date":"2026-06-20T20:02:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T20:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/487472\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T20:02:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T20:02:09","slug":"from-farm-life-to-forged-art-te-kuiti-sculptors-work-inspires-and-aids-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/487472\/","title":{"rendered":"From farm life to forged art: Te K\u016biti sculptor\u2019s work inspires and aids others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">His apprenticeship in mechanical engineering and his self-taught blacksmithing skills were suddenly in demand when he started receiving orders from his mum\u2019s friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn my spare time, I made a life-size charging bull from horseshoes, and it sold for good money. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI was still working, but it felt like the universe was pushing me in another direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">2022 was a busy year of change for Thomas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">He used the money from selling the bull to kit out his workshop with a decent welder, build a forge, and take a leap of faith.<\/p>\n<p>Rock and a hard place<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThings were a bit of a struggle that first year,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cTo get a name for yourself, you need to prove yourself and show people what you can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">He developed a love of working with corten steel and went door to door seeking commissions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">A pub commissioned a corten steel cowboy sculpture, which led to a further commission for five stag heads fashioned from horseshoes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">This kick-started his business and, once again, he invested in more tools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">He spent six months building a corten steel sculpture titled Rock and a Hard Place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">This striking and moving piece won the People\u2019s Choice Award at the 2023 NZ Sculpture Onshore, which raises money for Women\u2019s Refuge, supporting women and children affected by domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"&quot;Rock and a Hard Place&quot; won the People\u2019s Choice Award at 2023 NZ Sculpture Onshore.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>&#8220;Rock and a Hard Place&#8221; won the People\u2019s Choice Award at 2023 NZ Sculpture Onshore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat sculpture was inspired by my sister\u2019s experience with domestic violence while she was trapped overseas with a small child,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cShe really was caught between a rock and a hard place, and I hoped it would encourage her to keep fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">The sculpture depicts a woman made from corten steel, standing tall despite carrying a large, heavy rock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">With knowledge of the backstory, it is certainly a thought-provoking and powerful piece. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Thomas donated his prize money to Women\u2019s Refuge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat sculpture sat on my mum\u2019s lawn for a year before we decided to donate it to the auction at the 2024 Rural Industry Leaders Dinner, which runs alongside the National Fieldays to raise funds for the Rural Support Trust. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAt auction, Rock and a Hard Place raised $85,000 for the trust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019re a farming family, so it meant a lot to us that the sculpture was going to help rural communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The raw materials<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Thomas is particularly drawn to the challenges and possibilities presented by steel sculpting, and he enjoys exploring techniques that create different effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">He uses a wide range of materials, including corten steel, old horseshoes, farriers\u2019 rasps and stone, to craft sculptures that are unique and connected to New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI have a number of farriers who supply me with their old horseshoes and rasps, and a large sculpture can use hundreds of shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EoZyGajGNiPxVf\" style=\"display:none\">Using an LPG forge and an anvil, Thomas heats, beats and bends the steel. <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Jamie working on a metal skull commission in his workshop.
