“She was so, so brave but the race didn’t pan out for her,” McDonald said.

“They went too slow early and she got quite keen and then being left in front a bit earlier than I wanted.

“But she went great, she is a wonderful mare.”

Joliestar is owned by Cambridge Stud owners Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay, who were both beaming with pride but wondering what could have been.

“That much,” Sir Brendan Lindsay said, holding his hands a foot apart.

“But we love her and this has been a remarkable experience.’

Then came the most regal of compensations as the Lindsays and Joliestar’s expat trainer Chris Waller had a personal meeting with the King and Queen, who had presented the trophy to the winning connections but had asked to meet the Kiwis personally.

“To be standing here at Royal Ascot, have a horse race so bravely in a massive race and then for Jo and I to meet the King and Queen, these are things you can only dream of.”

Sometimes you don’t have to win for the dream to come true.
