Australian music legend Daryl Braithwaite<\/a> has announced his retirement<\/a> from live performances, calling time on a touring career spanning nearly 60 years.<\/p>\n

The 76-year-old shared the news in a statement posted to social media on Tuesday evening, revealing ongoing physical challenges<\/a> had made performing difficult.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to share this news with you all,\u201d The Horses<\/a> singer wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter much thought and consideration, I have made the difficult and sad decision to step back from performing live gigs.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor some time now it has been increasingly physically challenging for me to sing comfortably and as a result it has taken the joy out of performing, which has always been so important to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Braithwaite said the decision had not been an easy one after spending 58 years in the music industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI sincerely want to thank all of the dedicated and loyal supporters and all of the people and organisations that I have been associated with who have been such a significant part of my singing life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith much love and I thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

In early 2025, Braithwaite was forced to cancel and reschedule several shows due to an unspecified medical condition<\/a>, which he said was making his voice break down.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is so frustrating\u2026 you try all of the old and new secret remedies and hope,\u201d he wrote at the time.<\/p>\n

He had returned to touring after that setback, and his website lists gigs aboard a Norwegian cruise liner from late May to early June as his most recent performances.<\/p>\n

Once the lead singer for Sherbet, Braithwaite had two number one hits in Australia as a solo artist: You\u2019re My World in 1974, and iconic cult classic The Horses 17 years later.<\/p>\n

The latter track \u2013 a cover of a song written by Rickie Lee Jones and Walter Becker \u2013 remains popular to this day, having racked up almost 100 million listens on streaming service Spotify.<\/p>\n
