Interest in the Propitious Mango Ice Cream<\/a>, a viral fruit-shaped dessert produced in China, outstripped all other snacks by a mile with social searches up by 436% \u2013 an unsurprising feat given its rapid takeover of New Zealand store freezers<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n

Social searches for the United Kingdom\u2019s Tesco Finest Belgian Chocolate Cookies nearly doubled, growing by 94% year-on-year, while those for the popular Mexican creme-filled cupcakes Marinela Ping\u00fcinos also increased by 83%.<\/p>\n

Two products from American grocer Trader Joe\u2019s, their Speculoos Cookie Butter and Chili Onion Crunch condiment, also had social searches increase by 69% and 48% respectively.<\/p>\n

Herald magazine planning editor Sarah Pollok told Newstalk ZB\u2019s Heather du Plessis-Allan Drive the \u201cgrocery tourism\u201d trend first gained traction in 2024 and has only become more popular.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s been a real desire in recent years for authenticity when we travel,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to go where the locals go, and I mean what is more authentic than your weekly shop, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Pollok said supermarkets offer ways for travellers to sustain themselves cheaply, and the novelty of foreign food only makes the experience more unique.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hear a lot of people going, they\u2019ve got products that they\u2019ve loved in another country and there\u2019s a bit of nostalgia there, like whether there\u2019s like, old American candy or British products that they want to bring home. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut then sometimes it\u2019s just the bizarre things that you\u2019ll find in other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pollok said it showed that what can be commonplace to Kiwis can be felt to others like a novelty.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think about Whittaker\u2019s, and people will bring back like dozens of Whittaker\u2019s blocks. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was in the supermarket yesterday actually and I saw this guy\u2019s trolley filled with Whittaker\u2019s … It is delicious, but also, you can\u2019t get it anywhere else, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
