A sequel was announced soon afterward, but it has lingered in development hell for a decade now. While fans had the movie’s TV spin-off to tide them over, it looks like the long-awaited werewolf sequel We’re Wolves may finally be gaining some momentum. Collider’s Steve Weintraub got the news from Clement himself, who is at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival to promote his new film Kiri and Lou Go Raaa!, which is the first stop-motion movie from New Zealand.

What We Do in the Shadows follows a group of vampires living their undead lives in suburban Wellington, New Zealand; they also encounter a rival group of werewolves led by Anton (Rhys Darby), who attempt (and fail) to eschew profanity and violence. The sequel, We’re Wolves, was to center around that group. The follow-up film was first announced a decade ago, and has since moved at a glacial pace: in 2019, Waititi described it as “the film that Jemaine and I keep pretending that we’re making.” However, Clement says that he and Waititi have begun writing the script. “We’re writing it, actually. We started writing. For a long time, we were just talking about it. Now, we’ve started it. Very recently.”

He specifies that they began working on it this year, when his and Waititi’s busy schedules allowed it. “When we get together, we do some work on it,” he told Collider. Clement also confirms that, despite the success of the What We Do in the Shadows TV series, which wrapped up its sixth and final season on FX in 2024, We’re Wolves will be a movie. Clement discussed the difference between the largely improvised movie and the largely scripted TV series, and which method they intend to use on We’re Wolves:

“The question we have with the We’re Wolves movie… Have you seen the movie, What We Do in the Shadows? We did them in different ways. The movie is a 100% improvised dialogue to a storyline, and the TV show’s very much scripted with occasional improv, so they’re quite different to make. The challenge with the TV show was trying to have that feel where anything could happen because it’s improv, and we just did that by having a good cast, who were also amazing at improv. They’re actually some of the best in the world, I think.”

Both approaches have their merits and demerits, and Clement and Waititi have yet to decide which direction they’ll go with We’re Wolves. The original film’s approach was inspired by the improvisational nature of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but that proved challenging, given the feature’s low budget and ambitious premise:

“But the film was super low budget. It was less than $1 million, and just a month of messing around, and then saying, ‘Can we improvise a whole movie with special effects and people flying? Can we do it?’ It was like a challenge. Now we have to decide, ‘Are we going to script this one or are we going to do improv like the first one, or scripted like the show?’ It’s quite good to have the control of the shot. It’s really fun just making it up on the fly.”

Whichever path they choose, don’t get too excited just yet, as the script may not even be complete until next year. “At the pace we’re going, 2027, for sure. It helps to be in the same country, for Taika and I to be in the same country,” said Clement. He and Waititi have, however, been regularly communicating via Zoom, so we may see Wellington’s werewolves (not swear-wolves) baying at the moon before too long.

Collider Exclusive · Universe Personality Quiz
Which Iconic Universe Do You Belong in the Most?
Star Wars · Lord of the Rings · Harry Potter · Game of Thrones · Star Trek

        Five legendary universes.
