Sunnex said she had noticed children at the Koha Shed during school time<\/a> who \u201cdon\u2019t have what they need to get to school that day\u201d.<\/p>\n People on pensions who had been visiting on off-pension weeks for food support were now there \u201cevery day for a bag of food\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re just getting further and further below the poverty line. It\u2019s really quite difficult to see.\u201d<\/p>\n The mental and emotional toll on people had been immense, she said.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople are really depressed.<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019ve got people that are talking about giving up on life. What\u2019s the point? I\u2019m 70 now. I\u2019m going to die anyway. This is too much of a struggle. I\u2019ve worked all my life.<\/p>\n \u201cAll of that is happening in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n The Koha Shed was struggling to meet Whanganui\u2019s food support demand, she said.<\/p>\n Whanganui People\u2019s Advocacy Centre manager Sharon Semple said the cost of living was driving more people into its office than in previous winters.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not just the cold, it\u2019s the price of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n Rising energy bills, food costs and petrol prices were forcing people to decide what to prioritise.<\/p>\n \u201cEverybody\u2019s vulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n The People\u2019s Advocacy Centre helps people navigate government agencies, such as Work and Income NZ, to access the right support.<\/p>\n Overwhelming workloads had become the \u201cnorm\u201d as more people sought the centre\u2019s help each year, Semple said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe don\u2019t get morning tea breaks, lunch breaks. We work late most evenings to keep on top of the workload.\u201d<\/p>\n Staff are managing 40 to 50 cases each this winter.<\/p>\n Work and Income offers weekly Winter Energy Payments from May to October to eligible low-income households.<\/p>\n Single people without dependent children can receive $20.46 a week, while couples and those with dependent children get $31.82 a week.<\/p>\n Semple said Work and Income\u2019s acknowledgment of the situation was positive, but the payment amounts did not reflect the actual cost of power.<\/p>\n The payments have not changed since they were introduced in 2018, while wholesale electricity prices more than doubled from mid-2017 to 2025<\/a>, according to figures produced by consultancy Sense Partners for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
