{"id":497937,"date":"2026-06-27T08:32:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-27T08:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/497937\/"},"modified":"2026-06-27T08:32:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-27T08:32:16","slug":"northland-cancer-survivors-recovery-inspires-dry-july-fundraising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/497937\/","title":{"rendered":"Northland cancer survivor\u2019s recovery inspires Dry July fundraising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Nigel initially noticed numbing down his left-hand side, with his mobility slowing down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">After nearly six months of no improvement from physiotherapy, his wife Paula pushed him to get further testing, where an MRI found a huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/cancer-in-northland-how-health-nz-plans-to-improve-access-and-care-in-te-tai-tokerau\/7TVTM2TT6BH3BG5X5GZEJBFMJQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/cancer-in-northland-how-health-nz-plans-to-improve-access-and-care-in-te-tai-tokerau\/7TVTM2TT6BH3BG5X5GZEJBFMJQ\/\">mass on his pelvis eating into the bone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Nigel was rushed from the Far North to Whang\u0101rei Hospital and on to Auckland City Hospital, where he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/whangarei-mum-with-stage-4-melanoma-racing-to-fund-life-saving-treatment\/3SWPCOTW3BG4HM3WNT2E3H2H5U\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/whangarei-mum-with-stage-4-melanoma-racing-to-fund-life-saving-treatment\/3SWPCOTW3BG4HM3WNT2E3H2H5U\/\">diagnosed with stage 4 cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Oncologists feared surgery could leave him wheelchair-bound, so he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/minister-of-health-opens-609m-radiation-oncology-service-for-northland-patients\/IJ4GL57XYJG2HFJ2MN3H6OSETQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/minister-of-health-opens-609m-radiation-oncology-service-for-northland-patients\/IJ4GL57XYJG2HFJ2MN3H6OSETQ\/\">instead treated with radiation<\/a>, then given the same immunotherapy used to treat melanoma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">The two-year immunotherapy treatment was a success, with oncologists now unable to spot any signs of cancer.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Paula and Nigel Matthews are grateful Nigel has regained his mobility after cancer ate into one side of his pelvis.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Paula and Nigel Matthews are grateful Nigel has regained his mobility after cancer ate into one side of his pelvis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Paula said all the clinicians involved in Nigel\u2019s care were \u201cabsolutely fantastic\u201d, with the oncologist making the right decision about his treatment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe gave my husband a second chance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAnd I\u2019m taking it,\u201d Nigel quickly responded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">The cancer initially left Nigel with limited mobility, relying on crutches to get around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">About six months after his cancer diagnosis, he decided to start a Kait\u0101ia fitness class run by Candice, who encouraged Nigel to build the muscles around his pelvis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Taking part in the weekly fitness classes, Nigel quickly progressed and while his mobility isn\u2019t back 100%, he can now happily do a 3km walk.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Paula and Nigel Matthews, pictured in front, get physical and social benefits from their Kait\u0101ia fitness class run by Candice Kitt.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Paula and Nigel Matthews, pictured in front, get physical and social benefits from their Kait\u0101ia fitness class run by Candice Kitt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">With fishing being an important part of his lifestyle, he is also able to winch his boat by himself and pull in his big catches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI love my fishing, that\u2019s why I wanted to keep my strength up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Paula said Nigel\u2019s progress was impressive, given the damage from the cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt had eaten away most of his left-hand pelvis &#8230; His pelvis was just hanging there by one little bone and there was a huge hole,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Even Nigel\u2019s oncologist was blown away by the progress, with scans showing the exercise had helped improve his bone density.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Nigel credited Candice for being an inspiration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">While his fitness classes and exercises were initially funded by Pinc &amp; Steel, the success meant he continued on after the funding ended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Paula also joined the fitness class, initially just to support Nigel but staying on because she saw the benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Nigel was now sharing his story and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/dry-july-what-happens-to-your-body-when-you-ban-booze-for-a-month-jamie-morton\/65PGXVN72BDFFOICOJLHBS6QV4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/dry-july-what-happens-to-your-body-when-you-ban-booze-for-a-month-jamie-morton\/65PGXVN72BDFFOICOJLHBS6QV4\/\">taking part in Dry July<\/a> so other cancer patients could benefit from similar programmes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019ll certainly support it \u2013 if it means fundraising or helping other people, that\u2019s why I\u2019m doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">While Nigel admitted he enjoyed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/lifestyle\/dry-july-advice-on-giving-up-drinking-and-what-alcohol-does-to-your-body\/AP74CZMEINCHTDXI6NVTOXAVQM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/lifestyle\/dry-july-advice-on-giving-up-drinking-and-what-alcohol-does-to-your-body\/AP74CZMEINCHTDXI6NVTOXAVQM\/\">having an afternoon beer or two<\/a>, he gave up drinking for two years while undergoing cancer treatment and thought giving up for a month was worth the sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">He also encouraged people \u2013 particularly men around his age \u2013 to go to the gym and start exercising, with the benefits evident even for those without cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">The fitness class also provided great socialisation, Nigel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Dry July will start on July 1, with registration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dryjuly.co.nz\/?no_redirect=true\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dryjuly.co.nz\/?no_redirect=true\">free online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/author\/denise-piper\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denise Piper is a news reporter<\/a> for the Northern Advocate, focusing on health and business.
