Lipstick and lip liner have been a go-to combination since time immemorial. <\/p>\n
But over the last few months, the makeup pairing has experienced a resurgence – spearheaded by the likes of celebrity makeup artist Nina Park. <\/p>\n
The New York-based artist has gone viral for creating her signature sexy, undone glamour on famous faces, including Emma Stone, Zo\u00eb Kravitz, Greta Lee, Kaia Gerber, Charli XCX, Hailey Bieber and Lily-Rose Depp. <\/p>\n
Central to her aesthetic is what\u2019s now known as the \u2018Nina Park lip\u2019 – created by using a mix of products to shade and contour to give the illusion of lips that appear full and pillowy yet natural-looking. <\/p>\n
Luckily for us, her technique has been splashed across TikTok and Instagram for the everyday person to replicate. First, start with a soft matte lipstick all over the lips (blurred out with fingertips) before applying a cool-toned liner to define the lip border, and push a daub of blushing berry through the centre to finish. <\/p>\n

But Park isn\u2019t the only one with a lip combo worth replicating. We quizzed eight of New Zealand\u2019s top makeup artists to find out what lip products they\u2019re loving. <\/p>\n

Liz is a freelance makeup artist specialising in fashion editorials for the likes of Viva, Fashion Quarterly and Remix magazine, and commercial campaigns for Gucci, Claudia Li and Lexus. <\/p>\n
Liz says: \u201cBoth lip products are very versatile and suit fair to deep skin tones. I use the lip smudge to line and slightly smudge outside the lip line, giving the lips a natural, contoured look. The gloss bomb volumises and gives a hydrated, juicy look.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tallulah McLean<\/p>\n
Tallulah, also known as Look Bomb, is renowned for her boundary-pushing beauty looks. The freelance makeup artist was a judge in this year\u2019s Viva Beauty Awards 2026. <\/p>\n
Tallulah says: \u201cCurrently, I\u2019m using M.A.C Lip Pencil in Plum as a lip liner and Bobbi Brown Extra Lip Tinted Balm in Bare Claret over the lips. It\u2019s my perfect everyday nude. The liner works well to define my natural lip shape without being too harsh, and the lip balm texture is so luxurious on the lips and has just enough colour to provide a subtle tint.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kasia Stanicich<\/p>\n
Kasia is a Christchurch-based makeup artist specialising in both bridal and special occasion makeup looks. She also took out the top prize as the Makeup Artist Of The Year in this year\u2019s Viva Beauty Awards. <\/p>\n
Kasia says: \u201cI\u2019m starting a petition to bring back a multi-step lip combo. I\u2019m loving the art of softly over-lining the lip. The Power Play works as a contour for the lips, adding subtle shadowing for a perfect, pouty lip. Pout Pencil defines the edges and allows you to correct shape, and the new Phantom Blur Balms are a soft-matte dream – perfect for wearing your hair out and avoiding the lip-gloss-stickiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

A true creative, Kylee De Thier is a makeup artist, beauty influencer and co-creator of the She\u2019s Everything Makeup Palette, which was developed in collaboration with ShaanXO. <\/p>\n
Kylee says: \u201cMy favourite lip combo is the Lavish by Krih Clear Boss Gloss [w\u0101hine M\u0101ori owned] lined with the Half Magic Sculptitude Longwear Lip Liner in shade More Haze and Seize The Slay (duo). I use More Haze in the centre, and Seize The Slay on the outer corners for dimension.\u201d<\/p>\n

I love a liner and lip combo because it\u2019s so easy and you can reapply without looking! I had a lot of brides and bridesmaids request this over the past summer wedding season.”<\/p>\n

Hamilton-based makeup artist Gabrielle Houghton is the freelancer on speed dial for those based in the Waikato region. The talented artist also hosts her own makeup workshops and lessons from her studio. <\/p>\n
Gabrielle says: \u201cI love prepping and hydrating with Blistex Sensitive. I keep one on my bedside table and one in my car, it\u2019s only $6 and you virtually can\u2019t put too much on. To lip line, I favour colours with a dustiness to them, this makes the liner feel like a natural extension of a lip, and it lends itself well to over-lining. Makeup by Mario Smokey Pink is a favourite of mine and M.A.C Whirl also works well for this step. No matter what pencil I use, I\u2019ll soften and smudge the crisp edge out with my finger, this creates a lived-in look that wears off subtly. If I\u2019m feeling up for a special moment I\u2019ll top the liner with YSL Loveshine Lipstick in the shade 44 (a lovely posey pink) on top.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nikita says: \u201cMy favourite lip combo at the moment is all about layering. I\u2019ve been loving lip stains because I\u2019m someone who doesn\u2019t want to be touching up my lips all night. I want something that\u2019s super carefree and easy to reapply, while still knowing I\u2019ve got colour and definition underneath. I start with the NYX Lip Lingerie Lip Liner Stain in Up All Night as a base, and then go in with the Huda Beauty Lip Contour Stains in Warm Brown and Rich Brown to add more depth. After that, I use the NYX Duck Plump Matte Lip Liner in Toffee Temptation. Then I finish everything off with the Rhode Peptide Lip Tint in Ribbon. It\u2019s the prettiest pink shade and gives the most juicy, glossy finish while keeping my lips feeling really hydrated. It\u2019s become my go-to because even when the gloss wears off, I\u2019ve still got that stained lip underneath, so I\u2019m not constantly reapplying or worrying about my lip [look] disappearing. It\u2019s the perfect balance of long-lasting, low maintenance, and glossy.\u201d<\/p>\n
