{"id":498179,"date":"2026-06-27T12:12:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-27T12:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/498179\/"},"modified":"2026-06-27T12:12:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-27T12:12:11","slug":"wairarapa-emergency-centre-activated-after-storm-cuts-off-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/498179\/","title":{"rendered":"Wairarapa emergency centre activated after storm cuts off communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">The Wellington Region Civil Defence Emergency Management Group (WRCDEM) said the centre was stood up to co-ordinate the response after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/weather-calmer-weekend-ahead-after-gales-ease-warnings-lifted\/DBCAA3AGPVHPVFHLQ2RUFKNTSQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/weather-calmer-weekend-ahead-after-gales-ease-warnings-lifted\/DBCAA3AGPVHPVFHLQ2RUFKNTSQ\/\">severe weather<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Access to essential supplies, medical needs and welfare assistance would be provided. <\/p>\n<p>Communities isolated <\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">The \u201csignificant\u201d impacts from the wild weather around the region remained a danger, particularly around South Wairarapa. <\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">WRCDEM said the Turanganui Bridge on Lake Ferry Rd has been \u201cwiped out\u201d on its northern side, which isolated several communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cInitial assessments indicate that repairs could take until midweek to establish access, depending on the current weather conditions and access to rock material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Locals are encouraged not to go near the affected area because it is \u201cextremely dangerous\u201d, and disruptions could impact the crews working in the area. <\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Police will be on-site to encourage the community to adhere to this safety advice. <\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">WRCDEM said slipways are operating, and access to Martinborough has been reestablished via Longbush\/Hinekura. The ground remains heavily saturated, and there is a significant amount of debris on roads across the district.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">WRCDEM said slips were still likely in high\u2011risk areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPlease drive to the conditions and remain extra vigilant.
