he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I should be able to sit down with a group of mates and eat dinner without having any dramas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m proud of my culture, my t\u0101 moko represents myself, my family, where I&#8217;ve come from and what I&#8217;ve been through.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Burleigh Pavillion declined to discuss the matter, instead referring to its dress code, which stated &#8220;intimidating, aggressive or offensive tattoos aren&#8217;t permitted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A question of discrimination<\/p>\n<p>Pokai&#8217;s parents migrated to Australia before he was born and he was was raised on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<p>Kiwi-born residents made up seven percent of the city&#8217;s population, higher than other parts of Queensland and Australia, according to 2021 census data.<\/p>\n<p>Pokai said it was disappointing some Gold Coast venues did not accept patrons with t\u0101 moko.<\/p>\n<p>Others have also been refused entry to venues &#8211; and access to jobs &#8211; because of the body art.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/world\/570640\/man-denied-entry-to-wollongong-hotel-for-maori-facial-tattoo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wollongong man was refused entry<\/a> to a local hotel because of his t\u0101 moko.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, Air New Zealand ended its own ban on staff having tattoos, to acknowledge the importance of t\u0101 moko to those with M\u0101ori heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Queensland&#8217;s Anti-Discrimination Act prohibits discrimination based on attributes that include race, but not tattoos.<\/p>\n<p>The Queensland Human Rights Commissioner Scott McDougall said if a tattoo was a characteristic of a person&#8217;s race, including their ethnicity or religion, then refusing service, entry or treating someone unfavourably because of it could be discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>But the Queensland Human Rights Commission said it had never dealt with any claims of religious or racial discrimination relating specifically to tattoos.<\/p>\n<p>Healing post-colonialism<\/p>\n<p>T\u0101 moko artist Turumakina Duley began learning about his craft 30 years ago, when he picked up a homemade tattoo gun and started practising designs on his friends.<\/p>\n<p>Decades later, he moved to the Gold Coast to do t\u0101 moko from a home studio due to the high demand.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4K0BKOI_3d4197a3c9b24234d75c41445a9c2655_avif\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Turumakina Duley is kept busy doing t\u0101 moko six days a week.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nTurumakina Duley is kept busy doing t\u0101 moko six days a week.<br \/>\nPhoto: ABC\/Glenn Mullane\n<\/p>\n<p>He said the process of receiving a t\u0101 moko was far more personal and involved than just sitting for a simple tattoo.<\/p>\n<p>Customers spend time with Duley and discuss ancestral connections to their homeland and their reasons for wanting a t\u0101 moko before they decide on a design.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s become a healing modality for our people,&#8221;
