Olivia Wilde<\/a> has opened up about an odd critique she received about her appearance<\/a> from a casting director early in her acting career.<\/p>\n

The 42-year-old actor and director \u2014 whose new movie The Invite, co-starring Seth Rogen<\/a>, Pen\u00e9lope Cruz and Edward Norton, had a limited release on June 26 \u2014 recalled being told she had a \u201cpie face\u201d on Monday\u2019s episode of Dax Shepard\u2019s Armchair Expert <\/a>podcast.<\/p>\n

After Shepard complimented her, asking her if she ever downplayed \u201chow f***ing beautiful\u201d <\/a>she is, Wilde admitted: \u201cNo, because I did not feel beautiful at all. In fact, coming to L.A., I don\u2019t know, does anyone get to this town and feel beautiful?<\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, this is crazy. The first waiting room I sat in as an actress, I was like, \u2018Ah, I gotta go. This is a different species,\u2019 I think that it took me a while to understand that what made me, I guess we all kind of go on this journey, but like what made me different was good and I didn\u2019t need to try to make myself look like the other girls, but I really felt unattractive<\/a>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI definitely just felt such imposter syndrome. I remember a casting director early on, when I went to an audition, told me I had a \u2018pie face,\u2019\u201d Wilde said. \u201cBut she kind of said it in a way that sounded like she was trying to be nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilde admitted she felt ‘unattractive’ when she first got to Hollywood (Reuters)<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said something like, \u2018You\u2019ll be fine. You\u2019ve got…\u2019 I think she might\u2019ve said apple pie, pumpkin pie \u2014 so there was maybe a flavor attached to the pie,\u201d the Don\u2019t Worry Darling director recounted. \u201cBut I think she was trying to say something nice. I took it as like, \u2018You are hideous,\u2019 like flat [face], big head.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilde remembered walking away from the audition feeling defeated. \u201cWhen I think about the drawer of push-up bras that I had for auditions because I thought maybe that would help, and it doesn\u2019t,\u201d she noted. \u201cAnd it\u2019s so sad \u2014 being a 19-year-old going to auditions is rough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just last month, the House alum reacted in good humor to cruel comments about her appearance after a <\/a>red-carpet interview with <\/a>SFGate<\/a> at the premiere of<\/a> The Invite<\/a> went viral for the wrong reasons.<\/a><\/p>\n

Social media commentators suggested that Wilde looked bug-eyed and skeletal in the footage, even going so far as to compare her to Gollum from the Lord of the Rings films.<\/p>\n

Addressing the comparisons in a video on her Instagram Story, she posted a screenshot of her viral conversation with SFGate next to a photo of the Lord of the Rings character<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the background, her brother, Charlie Cockburn, asked: \u201cOlivia Wilde, do you care to address recent rumors that you\u2019re a resurrected corpse?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cListen, that\u2019s a fisheye lens,\u201d she laughed in the video. \u201cAnd I admit, is that my best angle? Was that my best-ever look? No. No, it\u2019s startling. It\u2019s a startling image.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reiterating that \u201cit was a fish-eye lens,\u201d Wilde added, \u201cI don\u2019t know why I was so close to the camera. I didn\u2019t have to be. That\u2019s not the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have any more questions?\u201d she asked her brother. \u201cI\u2019m not dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Invite, which follows a couple who invite their enigmatic neighbors to a dinner party that quickly spirals into unexpected places, is already garnering Oscar buzz.
