Plans get a jump-start<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are some really big barriers to building large successful constellations in orbit. And the first one is spectrum. Spectrum is finite and almost impossible to get,\u201d Beck said in a social media post.<\/p>\n

Buying the profitable, spectrum-rich Iridium will give Rocket Lab\u2019s \u201cspace application\u201d plans a jump-start.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe this will be one of the most transformative deals for the space industry.\u201d<\/p>\n
Iridium is based in Virginia, the US state that is also home to Rocket Lab\u2019s assembly plant and launch pad for its new, much larger Neutron rocket, due for its first flight later this year.<\/p>\n
Rocket Lab, which recently reported US$1.2b cash on its balance sheet, said it had taken a one-year, US$3.6b bridging loan with Deutsche Bank and Wells Fargo.<\/p>\n
The balance of the transaction funding will originate from cash reserves on Rocket Lab\u2019s balance sheet alongside planned debt and equity instruments.<\/p>\n
The transaction is expected to close in mid-2027, assuming regulatory approvals, including the FCC allowing Rocket Lab to take on Iridium\u2019s spectrum.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s the year\u2019s second major satellite deal. In April, Amazon bought the Apple-backed GlobalStar in a US$11.57b deal. The acquisition – due to close in the middle of next year – will complement the tech giant\u2019s own satellite launches as it builds its \u201cAmazon Leo\u201d constellation to compete against Starlink.<\/p>\n
