These trends are visible locally through lower cut levels and tighter margins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Late 2025 brought some stability, with domestic activity and export volumes improving but margins remain under pressure and prices subdued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Kait\u0101ia residents were bracing for the possible closure, with some saying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northland-age\/news\/far-north-juken-mills-sale-uncertainty-sparks-community-meeting\/HI5X3FC5FFD3PD4JN7N4G2JXGA\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northland-age\/news\/far-north-juken-mills-sale-uncertainty-sparks-community-meeting\/HI5X3FC5FFD3PD4JN7N4G2JXGA\/\">the loss of about 60 jobs would add pressure to the town and job market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Jobs aren\u2019t easy to come by in the Far North, where the unemployment rate sits at 7.4%, higher than the national average of 5.3%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Kait\u0101ia social service worker Don Thomas knew some workers who had been at the mill for more than 20 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019ve heard a few from them saying that it\u2019s going to be hard for this town, especially since it\u2019s the main source of work up here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Don Thomas and Percy Walker. Photo \/ Yolisa Tswanya<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSome people have been there for years and years and it\u2019s going to really affect them because they\u2019re going to need tickets to get into other jobs and they\u2019re quite old. <\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to really take its toll in the job situation because it\u2019s already a bad situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Simon, like other residents, said she was disappointed the Government was not intervening, given the envisioned impacts the closure could have.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Kait\u0101ia resident Wendy Crombie noted the mental toll the closure may take on staff and the area in general.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe are losing something important for this town,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Another local, Crystal Lambert, has friends working at the mill and said they were worried about their future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey actually had a pay rise and adjusted their lives to that, and the economic impact is going to be huge and finding jobs is quite tricky for people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Workers First Union has called for intervention and temporary public ownership of the Northland Mill, while criticising the Government for abandoning Northland\u2019s workers with empty words and a blame game.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" The Triboard operation is not affected and efforts to sell it are continuing. Photo \/ Yolisa Tswanya<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Workers First general secretary Dennis Maga criticised the Government responses to the potential closure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"NQVPqQgxO\" style=\"display:none\">Regional Development Minister Shane Jones has previously described the situation as \u201cenormously disappointing\u201d, saying Juken had not approached the Government for support.
