When Coyote Vs. Acme<\/a> finally hits cinemas this August, its mere existence can be counted as a victory. Because, notoriously, the film \u2013 a Looney Tunes live-action-animated hybrid, in which Wile E. Coyote tries to sue Acme for all their faulty products \u2013 was nearly wiped from existence. Back in 2023, it was shelved by Warner Bros<\/a> as part of a tax write-off alongside a handful of other WB films (including Batgirl), never to see the light of day. But then, its fortunes were reversed<\/a> \u2013 and nearly three years later it finally arrives, courtesy of new distributors Ketchup Entertainment. Like Wile E. Coyote himself, it proved to be a film that won\u2019t stay down.<\/p>\n

That, writer Samy Burch tells Empire, is core to the central conceit of Coyote Vs. Acme. \u201cWe had always wanted the film to be a love letter to failure. To reframe that word, because people don\u2019t like it,\u201d she explains. \u201cThat\u2019s what Wile E. is doing \u2014 he\u2019s failing every day. But that\u2019s not what defines him \u2014 it\u2019s his resilience that defines him. That plan to catch Road Runner didn\u2019t work? Okay. He\u2019ll get a new blueprint and make a new plan. There\u2019s beauty in that \u2014 in trying even when things are not coming easily and when you\u2019ve failed a hundred times before. Which is sort of the story of the journey of the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

For director Dave Green \u2013 and his entire cast and crew \u2013 the fall and rise of Coyote Vs. Acme has been an emotional rollercoaster. But he was heartened that people cared so much. \u201cBecause these are characters that people have grown up with, who\u2019ve been passed on between generations, when a corporation claims ownership and says, \u2018Actually, they don\u2019t belong to you,\u2019 sometimes that doesn\u2019t sit right with an audience,\u201d he says of the support the film had. \u201cI was very [moved] by the immediate rush of people who came to support us. Adil and Bilall, who directed Batgirl<\/a>, had my back. Lord and Miller beat the drum for us. Same with the Daniels. That moment of people standing with us was so beautiful. It was just an incredible outpouring.\u201d Case closed.<\/p>\n
