{"id":5044,"date":"2025-09-06T02:22:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-06T02:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/5044\/"},"modified":"2025-09-06T02:22:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-06T02:22:10","slug":"former-labour-mp-a-guest-speaker-at-nz-firsts-annual-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/5044\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Labour MP a guest speaker at NZ First&#8217;s annual meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  [&amp;_p]:tit-sub-xl tit-sub-xl md:[&amp;_p]:d-tit-sub-xl md:d-tit-sub-xl mb-[1.3rem]\">Former Labour Party MP Stuart Nash is one of the guest speakers at New Zealand First&#8217;s annual meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Nash had been widely rumoured to be considered aligning himself with the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">He told members it&#8217;s no coincidence leader Winston Peters and second-in-command Shane Jones were filling halls around the country.<\/p>\n<p>Peters predicts &#8216;massive victory&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Winston Peters earlier made brief opening remarks to open New Zealand First&#8217;s 32nd annual general meeting, reflecting on the 2023 election and predicting a &#8220;massive political victory&#8221; next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">He harked back to the 2023 election campaign, saying the parties on the left all promised they would fix everything if re-elected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a guy with a sausage roll, doesn&#8217;t ever have a meeting, but he&#8217;s got a parade of journalists following him everywhere&#8230; it was a disgrace,&#8221; he said, clearly referring to Labour leader Chris Hipkins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">He pointed similar critiques towards National&#8217;s Christopher Luxon &#8220;somebody else was on the other side eating ice cream most of the time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;They say &#8216;just re-elect us, we can fix it&#8217;. This is after they&#8217;d blown the country into massive debt. (Source: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;And here&#8217;s the tragedy. If they ever knew how bad things were, they&#8217;d have never said that. They would say &#8216;we could begin to fix it, but it&#8217;ll take time&#8217;. It&#8217;ll take years and maybe decades to turn it around wholly, but it&#8217;ll take time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">He concluded the nearly seven-minute speech, saying this convention would be &#8220;critical&#8221; and pointing to a &#8220;massive sea change&#8221; in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;Please go home and talk to your supporters, to all your friends who work with you back home and say, &#8216;get ready for convention 2026, and onwards to a major, massive political victory&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Election a year away<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">With about a year before the election \u2013 and freed from the responsibilities of Deputy Prime Minister \u2013 the next 12 or so months will be crucial for his campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The two-day event at Palmerston North&#8217;s Distinction Hotel will see the wider party membership gather to vote on 55 policy remits and hear from four guest speakers and the leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">A public speech from Peters will conclude the event starting at about 9am on Saturday, just down the road at the city&#8217;s convention centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">At last year&#8217;s AGM, Pro-Palestine protesters diverted attention during Peters&#8217; concluding public remarks, which focused on a pledge to campaign on a $100 billion infrastructure fund modelled off similar schemes in Singapore and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Security has been stepped up for this year&#8217;s event, with guards in hi-vis keeping tabs on those coming in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Peters opened with a salvo against his political opponents, the media and former Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Guest speakers included Australian senator Jacinta Price who railed against the Voice to Parliament; a union organiser Dennis Maga criticising ACT Party changes to contract law; and Save Women&#8217;s Sport Australasia&#8217;s Ro Edge opposing trans ideology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Policy remits NZ First members would debate and vote on include removing references to the Treaty of Waitangi from local and central government, and university\/school documents &#8220;except where directly relevant&#8221;, scrap co-governance (excluding Treaty settlements), develop a &#8220;long-term Demographic and Migration Strategy&#8221;, amend the Bill of Rights to &#8220;ensure that basic medical freedoms are safeguarded&#8221;, explore nuclear power, including fusion, consider exiting the Paris climate agreement and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/572258\/winston-peters-kicks-off-new-zealand-first-s-annual-gathering-in-palmerston-north\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rnz.co.nz<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Former Labour Party MP Stuart Nash is one of the guest speakers at New Zealand First&#8217;s annual meeting.&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":5045,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[111,137,43,139,69,135,136],"class_list":{"0":"post-5044","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-zealand","8":"tag-new-zealand","9":"tag-new-zealand-first","10":"tag-news","11":"tag-newzealand","12":"tag-nz","13":"tag-politics","14":"tag-winston-peters"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5044","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=5044"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5044\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/5045"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5044"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=5044"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=5044"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
