It\u2019s being touted as a moment that could reshape tourism, attract high\u2011value visitors, and shine a new spotlight on the talent in our kitchens.<\/p>\n
Hospitality NZ\u2019s Kristy Phillips told The Front Page<\/a> that the industry at the moment is in mixed health.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s that discretionary spend that makes a difference to our businesses, and we\u2019re often the ones who feel the effects first.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the same time, it\u2019s not just the cost of living now; it\u2019s those compounding effects that we\u2019ve had over the last few years. So we\u2019re seeing businesses that have been hanging on by their fingertips, and now they\u2019re describing it as hanging on by their fingernails.<\/p>\n \u201cBut they\u2019re still there, and they\u2019re still doing their best, and they still want to be part of their community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Hospitality closures and liquidations of popular eateries often dominate headlines, and Phillips argues there is not enough attention on what replaces them.<\/p>\n \u201cI think what hurts even more is the fact that there\u2019s often a new business going in or something new coming into the space that\u2019s actually gonna be really exciting and breathe new life into the area, and that doesn\u2019t get enough attention.<\/p>\n \u201cThose people are taking the chance and bringing something that brings a dream to life and to be able to say, \u2018Yes, this has closed, but wow, look what\u2019s coming next,\u2019 that\u2019s where some of the focus also has to be,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n A total of 110<\/a> hospitality establishments were recognised by Michelin, with one restaurant, Essence in Queenstown, becoming Oceania\u2019s first two-star restaurant.<\/p>\n Another 14 received one star, 35 achieved Bib Gourmand status, and 60 were put on the selected restaurant list.<\/p>\n Parnell\u2019s Tala became the world\u2019s first Michelin-starred Samoan restaurant. <\/p>\n The 14 recipients of one Michelin star were:<\/p>\n Ahi, AucklandAmisfield, QueenstownInati, ChristchurchKika, W\u0101nakaJano Bistro, WellingtonLogan Brown, WellingtonMudbrick, WaihekeOrtega Fish Shack, WellingtonParis Butter, AucklandR\u0101t\u0101, QueenstownSherwood, QueenstownTala, AucklandTantalus Estate Restaurant, WaihekeTussock Hill, Christchurch<\/p>\n Listen to the full episode<\/a> to hear more about:<\/p>\n Putting NZ on the mapA halo effect for tourismThe numbers behind the hype The future of hospitality in NZ<\/p>\n The Front Page is a daily news podcast from the New Zealand Herald, available to listen to every weekday from 5pm.
