{"id":505703,"date":"2026-07-02T05:57:21","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T05:57:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/505703\/"},"modified":"2026-07-02T05:57:21","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T05:57:21","slug":"sun-unleashes-powerful-x-class-solar-flare-and-earth-bound-cme-that-could-spark-northern-lights-for-july-4-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/505703\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun unleashes powerful X-class solar flare and Earth-bound CME that could spark northern lights for July 4 weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-4665ad85-8883-455d-9241-f2114bb6f19a\">A restless Earth-facing sunspot unleashed a powerful X-class solar flare on June 30, triggering radio blackouts across parts of North America.<\/p>\n<p>The X1.1 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar flare<\/a> erupted from sunspot region AR4479, peaking at 4:50 p.m. EDT (2050 GMT) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.gov\/news\/x11-flare-r3-strong-occurred\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.gov\/news\/x11-flare-r3-strong-occurred\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to NOAA&#8217;s Space Weather Prediction Center.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4665ad85-8883-455d-9241-f2114bb6f19a-2\">The intense burst of X-rays released during the eruption reached Earth in just over 8 minutes, triggering strong (R3) radio blackouts across the daylight side of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>. This mainly affected high-frequency radio users across parts of North America who may have experienced temporary signal degradation or brief communication outages while the flare was at its strongest.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4009a641-0039-4948-a2bc-f909b5b617a2\">The eruption also launched a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronal mass ejection<\/a> (CME) \u2014 a huge cloud of magnetized solar plasma hurled into space. (Image credit: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center)<a id=\"elk-59a5e81b-51bd-48e5-8562-8d36718a6f31\"\/>Will we see the northern lights?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-22d82d20-17d3-4ec7-838c-be9926e19124\">When Earth-directed, CMEs can interact with our planet&#8217;s magnetic field and spark geomagnetic storms, which can produce dazzling <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">northern lights<\/a> displays.<\/p>\n<p>A G2-level storm is capable of pushing the northern lights farther south than normal. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">According to NOAA<\/a>, auroras could become visible across some northern and upper Midwestern U.S. states, from New York to Idaho, provided skies are dark and clear.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Exactly how impressive the display becomes will depend on the strength of the CME and, crucially, the orientation of its embedded magnetic field when it arrives. Unlike the radiation from a solar flare, which reaches Earth at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15830-light-speed.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15830-light-speed.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15830-light-speed.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speed of light<\/a>, these clouds of charged particles typically take one to three days to reach us.
