We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>A new solar power breakthrough in China has improved the efficiency of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/middle-east-oman-kuwait-africa-california-b2950102.html\">desalination using sunlight<\/a>, an advance that could lead to the drinking water production from seawater becoming cheaper than bottled water.<\/p>\n<p>Amid a global <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/climate-change\/news\/drought-un-water-shortage-rivers-b2076078.html\">freshwater shortage<\/a>, water treatment and reuse has become essential, but the technology behind it still heavily relies on fossil fuels, making it unfeasible for harsh regions.<\/p>\n<p>While <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/climate-change\/news\/solar-power-device-clean-energy-b2445489.html\">solar thermal evaporation<\/a> is a promising method to treat water in such areas, its application has been limited by inefficiency and production constraints.<\/p>\n<p>Now, scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have developed a new three-dimensional (3D) structure that significantly improves the efficiency of this technology to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/iran-bahrain-desalination-plant-attacks-us-israel-war-b2934682.html\">convert seawater to drinking water.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Aerial-view-of-the-Hondoq-ir-Rummien-ir-rummein-desalination-plant-rocky-shoreline-small-beach-and-o.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Aerial view of the Hondoq ir Rummien ir-rummein desalination plant, rocky shoreline, small beach and offshore brine outfall pipe visible in the turquoise Mediterranean water in Qala, Gozo, Malta\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Aerial view of the Hondoq ir Rummien ir-rummein desalination plant, rocky shoreline, small beach and offshore brine outfall pipe visible in the turquoise Mediterranean water in Qala, Gozo, Malta (Hans Lucas\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The structure contains tightly linked polymer chains with hollow shelled structures that provide a record evaporation 8.5 times higher than rates previously reported for the technology.<\/p>\n<p>This unique structure maximises sunlight capture and decreases the energy consumption for evaporation by nearly 50 per cent, scientists say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis structure exhibits 90.2 per cent broadband solar absorption and reduces the energy consumption of evaporation by 45.7 per cent,\u201d scientists wrote in the study published in the journal Advanced Materials.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Schematic-illustration-of-the-desalination-system.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Schematic illustration of the desalination system\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Schematic illustration of the desalination system (Yu Dan)<\/p>\n<p>Tests also showed that the materials used had good durability and reliability during long-term use.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The excellent photothermal conversion and water transport capacity deliver such outstanding evaporation performance,&#8221;
