{"id":50691,"date":"2025-09-29T20:15:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-29T20:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/50691\/"},"modified":"2025-09-29T20:15:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T20:15:12","slug":"hurricane-forecast-imelda-and-humberto-bringing-dangerous-surf-and-coastal-flooding-for-us-back-to-back-hurricanes-for-bermuda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/50691\/","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane forecast: Imelda and Humberto bringing dangerous surf and coastal flooding for US, back-to-back hurricanes for Bermuda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4jsadr000d3b6n3zsb632o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/28\/weather\/tropical-storm-hurricane-imelda-humberto-track-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tropical Storm Imelda<\/a> is strengthening and is expected to become a hurricane by Tuesday as it moves off the Southeast coast, kicking up dangerous surf, rip currents, coastal flooding and beach erosion from Florida through the Carolinas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4l91ct001s3b6ngs5vpevs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the same time, Hurricane Humberto, which briefly exploded into a rare Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds Saturday, is now a large Category 4 hurricane. Located a few hundred miles east of Imelda, Humberto\u2019s massive size will compound the hazards for US beaches this week, driving deadly rip currents and big waves farther north along the East Coast than Imelda alone.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/al-storm1-rip-current-threat-tomorrow-kml-upload-2-092925.png\" alt=\"High rip current risks will extend along much of the Eastern Seaboard on Tuesday.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"720\" width=\"1280\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4jsadr000e3b6n8r7pmb0b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Imelda\u2019s center is expected to stay well off the US coast \u2013 a significant change in the forecast from over the weekend \u2013 but its wide-reaching storminess will still bring wet weather to some. Localized flash flooding is possible in the coastal Carolinas through Tuesday, but forecast rainfall totals have decreased substantially to an inch or less in most areas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg53km6a00063b6pmtgi60hl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Coastal flooding is also possible from Florida\u2019s Space Coast to North Carolina\u2019s Outer Banks, where onshore winds could push water 1 to 2 feet above normally dry ground at high tide.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4jjx5g00003b6nqtkt5hgf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Bahamas are still enduring Imelda\u2019s winds and heavy rain after being soaked over the weekend, even as the storm started to move away Monday afternoon. Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for parts of the islands, with 4 to 8 inches of rain expected to trigger flash flooding. Storm surge of 1 to 3 feet is also possible, while eastern Cuba could see 2 to 4 inches of additional rainfall and localized mudslides in higher terrain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4jsadr000g3b6n68teof8h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As of Monday afternoon, Imelda had sustained winds of 60 mph and was centered about 200 east-southeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is expected to intensify into a hurricane early Tuesday as it parallels Florida\u2019s Atlantic Coast, before making an abrupt turn eastward into open water.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4jsadr000j3b6nzq3varqo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That turn is thanks to Humberto: Imelda\u2019s slower than expected northward movement means Humberto will win <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/25\/weather\/fujiwhara-effect-hurricane-xpn-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a tropical tug-of-war<\/a> and pull Imelda away from the shoreline. This anticipated interaction between the two storms is the main reason threats of flooding rain and damaging winds are decreasing for the US compared to concerns over the weekend.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4jsadr000q3b6nto2u04oa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Officials in the Southeast had geared up to deal with the storm while the forecast looked more threatening. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/henrymcmaster\/status\/1971687328973574463\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">state of emergency<\/a> Friday, activating statewide response plans, but rescinded it on Monday. Charleston, South Carolina, declared a local state of emergency Saturday and began distributing sandbags and clearing storm drains. North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein also issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.nc.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/09\/27\/governor-stein-declares-state-emergency-ahead-hazardous-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">state of emergency<\/a> Saturday to mobilize resources.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4k8zyc001c3b6nxmpgs659@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bermuda will get the short end of the stick from this shift in Imelda\u2019s track and faces a rare one-two punch. Humberto is expected to pass west of the island as a large, powerful hurricane Monday into Tuesday, bringing bands of rain, gusty winds and dangerous surf. The Bermuda Weather Service has issued a tropical storm watch for the archipelago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4kfpfa001i3b6ncaia2yrl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On the heels of Humberto, Imelda could track even closer to Bermuda, with potential for a direct landfall Wednesday into Thursday. The hurricane could  dump up to 4 inches of rain on Bermuda during that time. Two hurricanes in a week could deliver a punishing blow, even for the seasoned and storm-tested islands.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4kho5r001p3b6njtjs434w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So far this year, the US has avoided a direct hurricane landfall. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/04\/weather\/storm-three-chantal-track-forecast?utm_source=cnn_Breaking+News&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;bt_ee=ljhCyvVIh0%2BLX%2FAWIiMw1Yh4JTsjpSAFjxswJXuIKV2TFx1umL9cyzpq6GRNuCPq0rZe9Hvv4PiyDZ4sWP4xWw%3D%3D&amp;bt_ts=1751720217804\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tropical Storm Chantal<\/a> came ashore in South Carolina this July, but no storms have reached the coast at hurricane strength in 2025. If this streak holds, it would be the first season without a hurricane coming ashore in a decade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmg4pqb1f00073b6q3u2ohvz0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, this season has been remarkable in another way: every hurricane so far \u2014 Erin, Gabrielle and Humberto \u2014 has reached major strength, a feat not seen this early since 1935. Major hurricanes are Category 3, 4 and 5 storms.
