Adrian Jones, said the tender process for the first section will run until December 2026, when the agency expects to award the contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">Construction of this section, from Cambridge to Kar\u0101piro, is expected to start in early 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">Procurement for the second section, from Kar\u0101piro to Piarere, is expected to get underway in the coming weeks, with a contract expected to be awarded in early to mid-2027, Jones said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWith consents granted, early works underway and procurement progressing, we\u2019re continuing to make good progress and move the project further toward construction,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe expressway will further improve safety, support economic growth and provide a more resilient connection for people and freight travelling through the central North Island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/budget-2026-almost-18b-to-extend-waikato-expressway-from-cambridge-to-piarere-as-part-of-roads-of-national-significance\/ABBKOLCCKFDP3KZECUPGAWAXFM\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/budget-2026-almost-18b-to-extend-waikato-expressway-from-cambridge-to-piarere-as-part-of-roads-of-national-significance\/ABBKOLCCKFDP3KZECUPGAWAXFM\/\">Budget 2026 included $1.773 billion<\/a> for the Cambridge to Piarere Expressway. <\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">The balance of the project funding will come from the National Land Transport Fund. <\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/waikato-news\/news\/the-toots-say-it-all-ministers-visit-future-waikato-expressway-extension\/JDDJKWWK3VGQDKZG45QNCNNEFQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/waikato-news\/news\/the-toots-say-it-all-ministers-visit-future-waikato-expressway-extension\/JDDJKWWK3VGQDKZG45QNCNNEFQ\/\">The new four-lane, 16km section of expressway<\/a> follows the existing SH1, from where the Waikato Expressway currently ends at Cambridge Southern Interchange, to Kar\u0101piro Rd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">Near Kar\u0101piro Rd, the alignment moves north on to a new corridor about 1km north of the existing SH1 and ends at the new SH1\/SH29 roundabout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">Key components of the Cambridge to Piarere project include a new interchange at Kar\u0101piro\u202fRd, an extension of local roads from near the existing end of the Cambridge Southern Interchange to the proposed Kar\u0101piro Interchange, and four bridges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">Three of those bridges will reach over existing gullies, while one overbridge will provide access to a realigned local road at\u202fTunakawa\u202fRd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/waikato-news\/news\/cambridge-to-piarere-sh1-extension-granted-resource-consent-by-epa-panel\/KFOY34HZLFECJIMELS4NPBOGVU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/waikato-news\/news\/cambridge-to-piarere-sh1-extension-granted-resource-consent-by-epa-panel\/KFOY34HZLFECJIMELS4NPBOGVU\/\">Consents for the project were granted in September 2025<\/a> and early works approved by NZTA in December are underway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">NZTA expects the construction of the whole project to take between five and six years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">The case for the Cambridge to Piarere Expressway extension was first identified in 2013 and work began on a business case, which was endorsed in 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">In 2021, the NZTA board supported the recommendation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"KGVqebHjEg\" style=\"display:none\">The project was confirmed as a road of national significance and a priority of the 2024-27 National Land Transport Plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NZTA
