{"id":513620,"date":"2026-07-07T06:05:09","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T06:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/513620\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T06:05:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T06:05:09","slug":"tax-dodging-builder-gets-community-detention-for-40000-evasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/513620\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax-dodging builder gets community detention for $40,000 evasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  [&amp;_p]:tit-sub-xl tit-sub-xl md:[&amp;_p]:d-tit-sub-xl md:d-tit-sub-xl mb-[1.3rem]\">An Auckland builder who repeatedly refused to pay tax has been sentenced to six months&#8217; community detention after evading more than $40,000 in income tax and GST.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Christopher Allan Mankin appeared in court on July 3, where he was ordered to pay $22,549.50 in reparation, according to a statement from Inland Revenue (IRD).<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Mankin faced two representative charges of failing to provide information to IRD with the intention of evading the assessment or payment of income tax and GST.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The court noted Mankin was no stranger to this type of offending, IRD stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">He had been convicted in 2019 over 34 charges of failing to provide information relating to income tax and GST across five years but continued to flout his obligations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Mankin registered for income tax in May 2011 and for GST in February 2013. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">His bank accounts showed regular income from building work, yet no returns were filed between 2018 and 2020. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Judge Paul remitted $3000 in fines owed by Mankin, in exchange for 150 hours of community work, to allow him to make reparations at $70 per week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The total tax evaded came to $40,618.60 \u2014 made up of $26,027.10 in income tax and $14,591.50 in GST, according to Inland Revenue. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An Auckland builder who repeatedly refused to pay tax has been sentenced to six months&#8217; community detention after&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":513621,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[51,138,67,42,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":["post-513620","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-auckland","tag-business","tag-crime-and-justice","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/513620","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=513620"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/513620\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/513621"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=513620"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=513620"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=513620"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
