Hospitality’s impact extends well beyond hotel walls. While it directly employs millions, its real contribution lies in the vast ecosystem it sustains. Hotels drive demand for farm produce, food suppliers, laundry services, transport, maintenance, artisans and numerous local enterprises, supporting millions of livelihoods across the value chain.

As the sector expands, its role as an employment engine will only deepen. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) estimates India’s travel and tourism sector contributed ₹20.9 trillion (US$249.3 billion) in 2024—around 6.6% of GDP—supporting 46.5 million jobs. By 2025, this is projected to rise to ₹22.5 trillion and over 48 million jobs. By 2047, the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH) expects an additional 100 million direct jobs, underscoring its potential to drive inclusive growth. This is the multiplier effect at scale.

These are not marginal numbers; they reflect a sector central to India’s economic story.

Demand trends are equally strong. India recorded 20.57 million tourist arrivals in 2024, up nearly 9% year-on-year. In 2025, 9.02 million foreign tourists generated approximately ₹2.74 lakh crore in revenue. Investment mirrors this momentum. In Q1 2025, India led Asia-Pacific (excluding China) in hotel development, with 693 projects and nearly 89,000 rooms under construction, according to Lodging Econometrics—up 19% in projects and 27% in rooms year-on-year. This signals not just recovery, but long-term confidence in India as a high-potential market.

Investor sentiment remains strong. JLL reports that India’s hotel sector attracted ₹1,635.94 crore (US$185 million) in Q1 2026, a 58% year-on-year increase. Such investment fuels demand across construction, agriculture, transport, food services and handicrafts, reinforcing hospitality as a key growth driver.

Crucially, growth is becoming more geographically diverse. Investment is shifting beyond metros such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru to Tier 2 and 3 cities, pilgrimage circuits, wellness destinations and heritage towns. This broadens economic benefits—new hotels bring improved infrastructure, connectivity, retail activity and employment, while fostering dining, weddings and experiential tourism that elevate local living standards.

Government policy is reinforcing this trajectory. Prime Minister Modi’s April 2026 call to “explore India” under the Dekho Apna Desh initiative highlights domestic tourism as a structural opportunity. When Indians travel within the country, they invest directly in local economies and communities.

Hotels today are also cultural ambassadors. By promoting regional cuisine, crafts and partnerships with local communities, the sector generates economic value while preserving heritage. As domestic tourism grows, hospitality will continue to strengthen regional economies and support millions of livelihoods.

The sector’s momentum reflects a convergence of factors: supportive policy, rising incomes, a young and aspirational population, and increasing investor confidence. There is also growing recognition that tourism infrastructure is economic infrastructure.

At its best, hospitality creates jobs across skill levels, preserves cultural identity and connects traveller demand with local economies in ways few sectors can. As India moves towards Viksit Bharat 2047, tourism and hospitality will play a pivotal role in job creation, regional development and global positioning.

Hospitality is far more than a service industry; it is a dynamic economic ecosystem. As domestic travel remains robust and international arrivals recover, the sector will continue to shape destinations, drive investment and enable inclusive, sustainable growth.

The author, KB Kachru, is president, Hotel Association of India (HAI), and chairman – South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group.
