TToH has begun identifying the 3000 patients affected, and will begin transitioning wh\u0101nau to other GPs, a statement released on Wednesday read.<\/p>\n
In the statement, TToH chairman Mike Paku called for urgent Government support to sustain kaupapa M\u0101ori GP clinics.<\/p>\n
\u201cTe Taiwhenua o Heretaunga has had to make the very difficult decision to transition half of our enrolled wh\u0101nau to other GP providers,\u201d Paku said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis decision has been made to protect the health and safety of our wh\u0101nau, first and foremost, while also ensuring we can support the workload and wellbeing of our GPs, nurses, and support within Hauora Heretaunga.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere possible, we will work to ensure wh\u0101nau members transitioning to another GP practice are able to stay together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Paku said central Government and its agencies needed to provide more funding, resources and support for M\u0101ori GP clinics.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe operate in a unique ecosystem<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are not-for-profit providers caring for a high proportion of wh\u0101nau with acute and complex health needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
TToH said despite a concerted recruitment drive, it had been unable to secure the staffing levels needed \u201cto sustain a safe clinical practice\u201d.<\/p>\n
It noted there was a severe shortage of GPs across Aotearoa. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are grateful to the medical community, who have stepped up \u2013 not only by offering clinical advice, but also practical support to help ensure continuity of care for wh\u0101nau. <\/p>\n
\u201cTheir willingness to work alongside us reflects the shared commitment we all have to the health and wellbeing of wh\u0101nau across our community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Paku said he acknowledged the situation would be disruptive and distressing for many wh\u0101nau.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor that we are deeply sorry. This decision has been made with their health, safety and wellbeing at the centre. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to assure wh\u0101nau that Te Taiwhenua will be there to awhi them every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n
