Six youths were taken into custody early this morning after allegedly fleeing police in a stolen car, driving the wrong way down the motorway for more than 4 kilometres. <\/p>\n
Police spotted the stolen Nissan Terrano travelling on Plunket Ave in Manukau just before 1.30am. <\/p>\n
Cameras tracked the vehicle until it reached Golflands Dr in Botany, and was followed by the Eagle helicopter. <\/p>\n
“The vehicle stopped momentarily on Golflands Dr, and police were quickly in the area signalling for the car to remain stopped,” Senior Sergeant Steve Albrey said. <\/p>\n
The vehicle then fled, mounting the footpath to avoid road spikes. <\/p>\n
It continued driving south on Te Irirangi Dr “on the wrong side of the road and at speed”.<\/p>\n
“Despite not being pursued, the vehicle has entered State Highway 1 heading south and once it reached Drury, it has driven the wrong way down the motorway for more than 4 kilometres,” Albrey said. <\/p>\n
The car was spiked in Bombay, but the vehicle kept going \u2013 eventually stopping in Ohinewai. <\/p>\n
Six people were taken into custody. <\/p>\n
“It is incredibly fortunate no one was seriously injured as a result of this incident,” Albrey said. <\/p>\n
A 16-year-old would appear in the Manukau Youth Court today charged with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.<\/p>\n
Five others, aged between 13 and 16, were referred to Youth Aid.<\/p>\n
