Three experts explain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia is racing to contain the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), which is now believed to have infected seven seabirds.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriculture.gov.au\/campaigns\/birdflu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed or suspected<\/a> cases of the H5N1 <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-first-case-of-h5n1-bird-flu-in-australia-has-been-confirmed-what-does-this-mean-285712\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clade 2.3.4.4b<\/a> strain in Western Australia, alongside one in South Australia and one in New South Wales. <\/p>\n<p>HPAI is still not established in Australia, and currently poses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov.au\/diseases\/bird-flu-avian-influenza\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">little risk<\/a> to human health. But the H5N1 strain has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/global-influenza-programme\/avian-influenza\/avian-a-h5n1-virus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">already devastated<\/a> wildlife populations globally. <\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re yet to see how this deadly virus will affect our country\u2019s wildlife. Here\u2019s what that means<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The role of scavengers<\/p>\n<p>The term carcass, which refers to the body of a dead animal, may make you queasy. But carcasses are a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fvets.2025.1683110\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">natural and vital<\/a> part of our ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>They provide food for scavengers, who in turn ensure our landscapes aren\u2019t littered with dead animal material. <a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/role-scavengers-carcass-crunching\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vultures<\/a> are the most well-known example.<\/p>\n<p>But Australia has no vultures. Instead, our \u201cclean up crew\u201d is made up of a hodgepodge list of native and invasive species including <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.7882\/AZ.2021.008\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dingoes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1098\/rspb.2018.1582\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tasmanian devils<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/jmammal\/gyaf096\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">red foxes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s10530-025-03722-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">feral pigs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1098\/rspb.2022.0521\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quolls<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/oik.10826\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raptors<\/a> such as kites and sea eagles, and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/jzo.13200\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">corvids<\/a> such as crows and ravens.<\/p>\n<p>We now know <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/brv.13035\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">48 species<\/a> of Australian vertebrate animals will, in certain conditions, feed on carcasses. But scavenging isn\u2019t limited to carnivores. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/vegetarian-possums-eat-meat-when-the-weathers-cold-231825\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research shows<\/a> almost all animals will scavenge if needed, including herbivores such as brushtail possums.<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A group of possums scavenging together at night.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/file-20260707-57-2050t3.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              Brushtail possums scavenging on a kangaroo carcass.<br \/>\n              Author provided (no reuse)<\/p>\n<p>Infected carcasses are a risk<\/p>\n<p>H5N1 in Australia poses a risk to any species that scavenges, or even touches, an infected carcass.<\/p>\n<p>Raptors, corvids and gulls commonly scavenge <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pone.0068221\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">along shorelines<\/a> and are most vulnerable to the virus. Mammals that forage <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.landurbplan.2013.06.004\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">along coastlines<\/a>, such as red foxes, may also be more at risk.<\/p>\n<p>The H5N1 strain <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1128\/AEM.00604-17\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can survive<\/a> in infected carcasses for up to 30 days at 20\u00b0C, and 240 days at 4\u00b0C. This creates a wide window during which scavengers can be exposed to the virus.<\/p>\n<p>A scavenger that eats a contaminated carcass may get sick. But they can also spread the virus by moving infected carcass material or infecting other animals through their bodily fluids. Scavengers may also die from the virus and contaminate any other scavengers that feed on <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.applanim.2021.105462\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">their carcass<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to predict how H5N1 may spread through Australia\u2019s scavenger species, because we don\u2019t have any detailed research looking at which species actually eat dead birds. <\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3201\/eid1412.080470\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">international research<\/a> shows mammals can be infected after consuming infected bird carcasses. Scientists have also observed high rates of H5N1 infection and death in vultures in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irec.es\/en\/publicaciones-destacadas\/gripe-aviar-propaga-buitres-espana-y-francia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Europe<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uga.edu\/bird-flu-rampant-among-black-vultures\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/file-20260625-57-m9hfti.JPG\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              A group of kites scavenging for food.<br \/>\n              Niraj Meisuria, Author provided (no reuse)<\/p>\n<p>Scavenging may be seasonal<\/p>\n<p>Whether scavengers actually feed on carcasses often depends on <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/jzo.13200\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the season<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1071\/WR22100\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Research suggests<\/a> birds and mammals scavenge more in winter compared to summer. That\u2019s because there is typically less live prey available in the colder months. <\/p>\n<p>This is concerning, given the H5N1 strain has arrived in the middle of the Australian winter. However, summer may slow the spread of the virus. One reason is <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/brv.13035\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scavenging insects<\/a> such as flies, ants and beetles can consume carcasses extremely quickly, sometimes even faster than mammals and birds. Can we stop the spread?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, what can we do?<\/p>\n<p>There are several ways we can curb the spread of H5N1 through our scavenger species. <\/p>\n<p>One is to immediately remove any infected carcasses, particularly from high-value conservation areas. We should also limit activities likely to cause the build-up of carcasses, such as recreational duck or quail hunting.<\/p>\n<p>Where we can\u2019t get rid of carcasses, we must track scavenger activity. This is possible through <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fvets.2025.1683110\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carcass monitoring<\/a>, which can help identify which species are actually eating dead birds and whether they are native or introduced. We want to protect our native scavengers, while <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/brv.13035\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">limiting the harm<\/a> introduced scavengers may do to our ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>We must also monitor the scavengers themselves. As with <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifehealthaustralia.com.au\/Portals\/0\/ResourceCentre\/FactSheets\/Avian\/Avian_influenza_in_wildlife_in_Australia.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wild birds<\/a>, this allows us to notice any virus-related health problems and measure overall infection rates.<\/p>\n<p>Our bird flu response must prioritise the health and management of scavenger animals.
