Kmart<\/a> has released a new version of its olive oil<\/a> spray-and-pour bottle that will help keep the liquid gold fresher for longer.<\/p>\n

Retailers across the country have released this type of product that allows you to dispense the oil in two ways<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But if it comes in a clear bottle, like Kmart’s OG version<\/a>, it can degrade what’s inside faster than you’d like.<\/p>\n

“When olive oil is exposed to UV light, if it’s on the bench, that accelerates some of that breakdown of the antioxidants in the oil, Queensland-based nutritionist Leanne Ward told Yahoo Lifestyle.<\/p>\n

This is why a lot of olive oil comes in dark green bottles, as that can shield the liquid inside from the sun’s rays.<\/p>\n

Kmart has jumped on that concept and has now dropped a green-bottle version of the $7.50 item.<\/p>\n

The 500ml bottle can pour olive oil if you want to drip it over a salad or a delicious dish, but a simple button can also spray the liquid if you are using it for roast potatoes, for example.<\/p>\n

The clear version has rave reviews ever since it landed on shelves last year.<\/p>\n

It has a near-perfect 4.7 out of 5 rating on Kmart’s website, and customers have called the quality “good” and the value “excellent”.<\/p>\n

“[It’s] a game changer,” wrote one person. “I just had straight glass bottles, which can become slippery over time when holding and pouring, highly recommend.”<\/p>\n

“It’s great for coating potatoes in pans evenly instead of oil flooding out of the grocery store bottles,” added another.<\/p>\n

“So glad I bought this, so if you see it – grab it. In fact, grab two. Love the convenience of how versatile this is with both the spray and pour feature in one,” wrote a third.<\/p>\n

How do you know when your olive oil has gone off?<\/p>\n

If you decant your olive oil from the store-bought bottle into one of Kmart’s, you’ll run into one issue: you won’t know what the expiry date is.<\/p>\n

But Leanne said you’ll notice when your olive oil is degrading when the taste becomes “flat and stale”.<\/p>\n

It will eventually become “rancid”, and the colour will have faded.<\/p>\n

“It goes from that beautiful blend of yellow and green, like when you go to a beautiful Greek restaurant, and they give you the good stuff,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It almost has a green tinge to it, which means it has a really high antioxidant content.<\/p>\n

“But over time, it becomes a little bit more yellowish.”<\/p>\n

If you have your oil in a clear bottle, it’s best to store it inside a dark cupboard and not next to the stove.<\/p>\n
