Evacuate to higher ground\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">Just before 10pm, Hawke\u2019s Bay Civil Defence issued an emergency mobile alert for low-lying areas near the Wairoa River, including houses between Outram Street and Grant Street, and Kopu Road and Apatu Street. <\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cEvacuate now. Evacuate to higher ground or inland,\u201d the alert said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPeople in this area must leave now, take essential items and pets with you. If lives are in immediate danger dial 111.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAvoid travelling through flood water if possible. Stay out of flooded areas until advised by officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOrganise to stay with friends or family if you can, or go to Wairoa War Memorial Hall a Civil Defence Centres will be established there to provide assistance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere is serious flooding in low-lying areas of Wairoa from the Wairoa River.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">Wairoa District Council had earlier warned residents to be ready to leave at a moment\u2019s notice &#8211; concerned about the lower catchment of the Wairoa River.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">The roads closed as at 11.30pm on Thursday were: <\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Karaka Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Browne Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Sturdee Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Rose Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Outram Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Kopu Road (Spooner\u2019s Point to Pilot Hill)<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Grey Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Lion Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Colin Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Grant Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> McLean Street (Fraser Street to Colin Street)<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Mohaka Coach Road (fallen trees)<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Glenbrook Road (low-lying areas)<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Kotare Road (low-lying areas)<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> Ruakituri Road (closed)<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">SH38 \u2013 Frasertown to Tuai (surface flooding, trees and debris)<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\"> SH2 \u2013 Turiroa Cutting (flooding)<\/p>\n<p>Earlier<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">Wairoa District Council said earlier police would be door knocking properties in the area to ensure residents were aware of the changing conditions and to assist anyone who may need to evacuate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gngXgPCjmfo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf you live in or near this area, please be prepared to leave immediately if advised to do so. If you feel unsafe, do not wait.
