Air fryers have been all the rage in Aussie kitchens over the last few years, and Kmart has been offering a mix of big and small devices.

But a new item has hit Kmart shelves across the country, and it’s part of a new trend in the air fryer space.

Retailers like Sunbeam, Ninja, and Smith & Nobel have released devices with glass baskets, which come with one massive benefit: you can see how your food is cooking.

Kmart is now selling one for $119, and it’s already been called a “game-changer” by shoppers.

The device comes with five cooking functions, including air fry, roast, bake, crisp, and keep warm.

In the box, you’ll get two glass containers for cooking, along with lids so you can store your food in the fridge after cooking.

One of the biggest annoyances with regular air fryers is that you never really know if your food is done.

You might have to pull out the basket several times just to check on breakfast, lunch, or dinner, only to see that it definitely needs more time.

Glass air fryers fix this issue as they give you the perfect window into your food.

One major problem has been discovered with glass air fryers

While they overcome one issue, they present another.

Consumer group CHOICE did a deep dive into the new air fryer trend and discovered that they can get extremely hot while cooking.

“We have measured temperatures on these baskets of over 100 degrees, depending on the settings used,” CHOICE kitchen expert Chantelle Dart said.

CHOICE kitchen expert Chantelle Dart said glass air fryers can be great but they have one big downside.

“So you really need to exercise caution and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions to ensure you don’t burn yourself.”

For this reason, Chantelle recommended buying a model made with thermal shock-resistant borosilicate glass, which can handle the high temperatures.

Kmart’s instruction manual for the glass air fryer urges shoppers to be careful with the glass.

“Do not touch the glass containers during use or immediately after use,” it states.

“The glass containers get very hot. Only hold by the handle using oven mitts.”

It also states that steam is released through the air outlet, and it’s best to keep your distance from that area to avoid scalding.

Another “important” caveat is to place the unit on a heat-resistant surface or pad if it’s taken off during or immediately after it’s finished to prevent damage to your bench top.

Some glass air fryers can also be fairly heavy, so it can be a struggle to shake the container mid-way through cooking.

Kmart’s website only has the weight for the unit as a whole, which is 5.9kg.
