Brisbane has emerged as one of Australia\u2019s most exciting city breaks. At the heart of its transformation is The Calile Hotel, a design-led destination that helped redefine Fortitude Valley.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not exaggerating when I say The Calile Hotel convinced me to move to Brisbane. <\/p>\n
\n That might sound like hyperbole,
\n but discovering the hotel on Instagram in 2018 helped lay the foundations for my brief relocation there in 2025.\n <\/p>\n
As I scrolled through images of the pool, its sage-green umbrellas, palm trees and smooth concrete curves bathed in hazy sunlight, I figured it must be in Miami or Rio. But wait … this dreamy place is in Brisbane?<\/p>\n
If The Calile seemed out of place in Brisbane when it opened in 2018 \u2013 a city sometimes given the side-eye for its perceived lack of sophistication compared to Melbourne and Sydney \u2013 that\u2019s because it kind of was. Brisbane was still emerging as the confident international city it is today.<\/p>\n

Nearly a decade on, the city\u2019s rise shows no sign of slowing, with a wave of new restaurants, revitalised public spaces, especially by the river, and flash accommodation helping reshape its reputation ahead of the 2032 Olympics.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a glow-up that\u2019s convinced me, and many others, to spend more time there.<\/p>\n
At the centre of that transformation is The Calile on James Street. <\/p>\n
More than a hotel, it\u2019s helped redefine Fortitude Valley, turning a once-gritty warehouse district into one of Brisbane\u2019s most desirable shopping and dining precincts. <\/p>\n
If the surrounding streetscape all seems beautifully interwoven, that\u2019s the whole point, with shopfronts connected by stone-tiled laneways, breezy walkways and subtropical landscaping designed by The Calile\u2019s architects Richards & Spence.<\/p>\n

My stay at the hotel came via an invitation to one of its regular Calile Culture events, which range from Australian Chamber Orchestra performances and artist residencies through to panel talks with leading creatives. <\/p>\n
The hotel prides itself on engaging with its community, and \u2018Meet the Masters\u2019 from its Rooftop Harvest events series was a seven-course degustation served at a long, 100-seat table in the adjoining laneway. <\/p>\n
Dishes were prepared by Calile restaurants Hellenika, Lobby Bar and SK Steak Oyster, and nearby favourites Same Same, Bianca and Cru Bar, using produce from the hotel\u2019s rooftop garden. <\/p>\n
The evening brought together the best of the James Street dining scene in one place \u2013 like a tasting menu version of restaurant-hopping that reinforced The Calile\u2019s taste-making role within the neighbourhood. <\/p>\n

Afterwards, I retreated upstairs to my Deluxe Suite, a 48sq m corner suite with a separate living and dining area, a generous bathroom and a king-size bed set beneath curved windows framing Brisbane\u2019s cityscape. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s one of nine room-types across seven levels, from the 27sq m Essential to the 69sq m top-of-the-range Ada and Calile Suites. <\/p>\n
I made the most of the day before the event, to settle in and take in the details I\u2019d only seen through a screen. <\/p>\n
Making a beeline for the sliding door leading to the terrace, I pull back the gauzy curtains to reveal a scene that is even more striking in real life: bronzed guests clinking margaritas, reading and snoozing around the glittering pool, the smell of wood-fired meats drifting from the ground-floor restaurants and the late Brisbane sun setting everything aglow. <\/p>\n
I soak up every minute of the suite \u2013 filling the monumental round tub with Grown Alchemist bath salts, slipping into The Calile linen robe and sipping a Calile spritz (pre-made and stocked in the minibar). <\/p>\n
I perch at the desk and pretend to work, gazing out the porthole window. <\/p>\n
I head down to Lobby Bar for a cold beer at a laneway table and observe people arriving (lucky) and leaving (reluctantly), and the steady bustle of the surrounding shops and restaurants. <\/p>\n
I browse the library\u2019s art books and peer through the gym\u2019s door (I wasn\u2019t that keen to try everything).<\/p>\n

I decide there\u2019s no corner of this hotel that isn\u2019t gorgeous. <\/p>\n
Outside the elevators, giant monstera palms and trailing vines soften the stone-tiled walkways, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow across the floor throughout the day. <\/p>\n
Even the open-air passageways feel special, designed for Brisbane\u2019s subtropical climate with half-moon breezeblock walls that allow air to flow through and open the building to the sky.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s little wonder The Calile was named one of the World\u2019s 50 Best Hotels for the third year in a row in 2025. <\/p>\n
I leave feeling like I\u2019ve barely stepped outside The Calile\u2019s orbit \u2013 and that\u2019s exactly the point.<\/p>\n
Where to shop, eat and play around Fortitude Valley <\/p>\n
Swop <\/p>\n
With outposts in Melbourne and Sydney and now Brisbane, Swop is an impressive curation of secondhand and vintage clothing and accessories. Housed in a gallery-like space on Wandoo St, the racks are filled with a rotating selection of designer names from Acne to Thom Brown, Chloe to Margiela. <\/p>\n
St Agni<\/p>\n
Hailing from Byron Bay just down the coast, St Agni is an independent Australian label specialising in contemporary, minimalist womenswear. Don\u2019t miss St Agni\u2019s edit of eyewear, shoes and accessories. <\/p>\n
Luxury clothing brand P Johnson. <\/p>\n

Luxury clothing brand P Johnson recently opened a dedicated womenswear store on Doggett St, retaining its original James St location for its refined edit of menswear. Styled like a Parisian salon, the store is a reflection of the artisanal details of the P Johnson collection.<\/p>\n
Carmague<\/p>\n
One of several fashion boutiques a stone\u2019s throw from The Calile, Carmague brings together around 100 luxury international brands across clothing and accessories. <\/p>\n
Penelope is a late-night spot.<\/p>\n

Designed as a late-night spot, when DJs turn the bar into a dance floor, Penelope is also great for a martini and a snack in one of its sexy sunken booths.<\/p>\n
Emme<\/p>\n
An all-day eatery with some of the best coffee in Fortitude Valley, Emme is as good for a takeaway flat white as it is for a Hugo Spritz and a charcoal chicken salad over lunch.<\/p>\n
A taste of Aotearoa<\/p>\n
Coffee roasters Allpress have just opened a breezy cafe on Robertson St and Kiwi clothing brand Rodd & Gunn\u2019s The Lodge Bar has a Brisbane restaurant in a beautiful converted Queenslander on James St. Head upstairs to the terrace for some of the best views of the street.<\/p>\n
