Five others have pleaded not guilty to aggravated robbery and murder. They await trial later this year. <\/p>\n
Denying justice<\/p>\n
Whorrall, 33, was sitting at a bus stop in Meadowbank about 10pm on a Saturday night during Easter Weekend last year, returning to his flat from a nearby grocery store, when a black SUV pulled up and at least two occupants approached him, authorities have alleged. <\/p>\n
He suffered multiple head injuries, at least one of which was fatal, after being struck with a \u201clong\u201d weapon, police said in the immediate aftermath of his death.<\/p>\n
Justice Kawharu briefly elaborated in her sentencing remarks today, noting that he was hit with a machete. <\/p>\n
Kyle Whorrall, the 33-year-old US student killed at an Auckland bus stop in Meadowbank in April 2025, and his insects. <\/p>\n
It is alleged the attackers then picked up Whorrall\u2019s wallet, which had fallen to the ground, and left the scene. He later died at hospital.<\/p>\n
The vehicle Whorrall\u2019s attackers allegedly arrived in, a Mitsubishi SUV, belonged to the woman sentenced this week. However, she was not at the scene of the alleged attack. <\/p>\n
The next day, when the woman came to believe her vehicle had been involved in the incident, she quickly arranged to trade it on Facebook Marketplace for another vehicle worth far less, knowing it might be evidence. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou are not responsible for Mr Worrell\u2019s death, but you are responsible for trying to deny justice to him, his family and his friends, and that\u2019s why you are here today,\u201d Justice Kawharu said. <\/p>\n
\u2018A kind and gentle man\u2019<\/p>\n
Whorrall had been just months away from submitting his PhD thesis in entomology, which would have resulted in him being known as Dr Whorrall, his mother noted in an emotional victim impact statement read aloud in court for the first time today. <\/p>\n
Although he came to New Zealand for postgraduate studies, he loved his adopted homeland and wanted to stay, Carole Whorrall said. <\/p>\n
She had been excitedly planning a visit for his University of Auckland graduation to help him celebrate \u201ca milestone he worked tirelessly to achieve\u201d when she received the devastating and life-altering news. <\/p>\n
Carole Whorrall recalled her son as both \u201cbrilliant\u201d and \u201cdeeply passionate about the natural world \u2013 particularly insects\u201d. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe was an extraordinary individual, and I am extremely proud to be his mother,\u201d she added, noting that not only was she robbed of a son, the world was also robbed of the contributions he would have made to science. <\/p>\n
The still deeply grieving mother did not attend the hearing in person but watched via an audio-video feed. Her statement was read aloud by prosecutor Taniela-Afu Veikune.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe lived his life with integrity and purpose,\u201d Kyle Whorrall\u2019s mother continued in the written statement. \u201cThis crime … extinguished a future filled with promise and devastated an entire family.\u201d<\/p>\n
His father, in a letter submitted to the judge but not read aloud in court, referred to him as a \u201ckind and gentle man\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019d walked that route to the supermarket countless times,\u201d one of the roommates said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t make sense of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The death made him feel more isolated, with a major member of his immigrant support network now gone and a changed perception of the world, he said. <\/p>\n
Another flatmate also recalled her daily walks with Whorrall through the neighbourhood as they discussed their challenges with ADHD \u2013 that walk, one of her coping mechanisms, no longer possible because of her newfound fear. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe was always there to listen, encourage me and lift my spirits,\u201d she said, recalling how Whorrall liked to decorate the house to amplify holidays that the housemates had previously given little attention to. <\/p>\n
\u201cKyle had a unique ability to make ordinary moments special.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was \u201cendlessly curious\u201d and would cycle through new hobbies, having recently started sewing little plush toys, she recalled. They also started a garden together, which has since died because she couldn\u2019t bear to continue it without him. <\/p>\n
\u201cKyle\u2019s death has left an emptiness in our house that cannot be replaced,\u201d she said. \u201cI think about moving away almost every day, and I even think about leaving New Zealand altogether because it no longer feels like the safe country I once believed it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
Home detention not sought<\/p>\n
Being an accessory to murder after the fact carries a maximum possible sentence of seven years\u2019 imprisonment. <\/p>\n
But following the guidelines of previous cases, Justice Kawharu noted that longer sentences are usually reserved for people who assist with body disposal. For trying to interfere with an investigation, she agreed with the Crown the starting point should be 18 months. <\/p>\n
Defence lawyer Anoushka Bloem had argued for a 15-month starting point, suggesting the planning and premeditation had been relatively low and that her client texted the purchaser back the next day asking him to return the SUV. Her actions did not materially obstruct the investigation, Bloem said. <\/p>\n

But the level of harm caused to Kyle Whorrall\u2019s family was severe, the judge said. <\/p>\n
She noted the woman\u2019s difficult upbringing, which included stints in state care, leaving school at 15, her mother\u2019s death at 17 and having an alcoholic father. But she allowed only one reduction: 10% for the woman\u2019s guilty plea. <\/p>\n
The judge then uplifted the sentence by one month to account for the fact the woman was serving a sentence of intensive supervision and was awaiting another sentencing for a range of dishonesty charges when she committed the new crime. <\/p>\n
Her lawyer did not ask the judge to consider home detention. <\/p>\n
