{"id":525704,"date":"2026-07-14T14:10:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T14:10:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/525704\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T14:10:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T14:10:15","slug":"athletics-kerr-leaves-commonwealth-games-high-jump-title-defence-up-in-the-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/525704\/","title":{"rendered":"Athletics: Kerr leaves Commonwealth Games high jump title defence up in the air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">High jumper Hamish Kerr will travel to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games, but whether he will attempt to defend his title remains uncertain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/sport\/598188\/new-zealand-athletes-headed-to-2026-commonwealth-games-named\" class=\"underline-brand-hover visited:text-foreground-secondary hover:visited:text-foreground-primary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Olympic and world champion<\/a> was last month named among the 21 track and field athletes for the Games, which start on 23 July, despite not having competed internationally this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">Over the weekend Kerr took to social media to explain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">&#8220;A couple of months ago, the demands of the last few seasons finally caught up with me, so I made the decision to take a break from training,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">&#8220;Since returning, I&#8217;ve been really encouraged by the progress I&#8217;m making and am feeling positive about where things are heading. I&#8217;m excited and hopeful that I&#8217;ll be back competing again soon. Thanks for all the support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">A spokesperson for Athletics New Zealand told RNZ Kerr will be at the Games, but a decision on whether he contests the high jump, which starts on 27 July will be made &#8220;closer to the time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"[&amp;_em]:font-serif-text-italic [&amp;_cite]:font-serif-text-italic\">The national body said they were not caught out by Kerr&#8217;s message to his fans.
