Goodwin told the inquest in Auckland this morning that he became aware of Samsudeen\u2019s behaviour a month after the man was released from prison, in August of 2021, when his lawyer contacted him \u201cout of the blue\u201d.<\/p>\n
The lawyer\u2019s identity is suppressed.<\/p>\n
Goodwin said that within \u201ca few minutes\u201d of reviewing the texts between the lawyer and the man, he realised she was in a \u201cvery serious\u201d situation.<\/p>\n
The communication showed Samsudeen was \u201cstalking\u201d his lawyer and, more concerningly, trying hard to meet with her alone, which was a major \u201cred flag\u201d, Goodwin said.<\/p>\n
In late August, he told the court he advised the lawyer to cease meeting with Samsudeen for her safety.<\/p>\n
The volume, duration and content of the texts Samsudeen sent were concerning and showed he could have been suffering from \u201cerotomanic delusion\u201d.<\/p>\n
Erotomanic delusion, he explained, was a psychiatric term for when a person wrongly believes someone is in love with them.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are absolutely convinced … in a deluded sense that the other person wishes to have a relationship with them.\u201d<\/p>\n
This was marked, he said, by continued contact, even when told not to, and persistent attempts to maintain that contact.<\/p>\n

The non-association orders<\/p>\n
The inquest heard earlier this week that Samsudeen was given non-association orders relating to a female police officer and his lawyer in the days before the attack.<\/p>\n
On September 1 of 2021, he received an order not to associate with the officer; the following day, he was ordered not to contact his female lawyer, and by September 3, he injured five people with a knife.<\/p>\n
Four of them were women.<\/p>\n
Before the orders were made, the inquest heard, the lawyer did not want to be identified as a complainant for fear of provoking Samsudeen.<\/p>\n
Goodwin agreed that was a reasonable fear and said that generally, non-association orders can make a stalker \u201cquite angry\u201d, generating a \u201csense of betrayal\u201d.<\/p>\n
It was important to be aware of what the reaction might be, the psychiatrist said.<\/p>\n
Fletcher Pilditch, KC, acting on the interests of Samsudeen\u2019s family, asked if, given what was known about the man at the time, it would have been \u201cideal\u201d to have a plan in place for when the orders were made.<\/p>\n

Samsudeen \u2018frustrated\u2019 and \u2018thwarted\u2019<\/p>\n
The psychiatrist described, in hindsight, his assessment of Samsudeen at the time of attack. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe strikes me as a man who\u2019s being thwarted in every direction,\u201d Goodwin said of Samsudeen.<\/p>\n
He was not allowed a laptop with internet access, struggled to get a phone, then there was the situation with the lawyer, which, Goodwin said, Samsudeen was \u201cfrustrated about and also thwarted\u201d by.<\/p>\n
Goodwin said he could not separate the September 3 attack from Samsudeen\u2019s stalking behaviour.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs I stated in my report, I think it\u2019s a factor in what occurred,\u201d Goodwin said. \u201c… I suspect that Mr Samsudeen was feeling frustrated, angry, perhaps betrayed with the non-association order. <\/p>\n
\u201c … [To] undertake an act that might have resulted in his own death … I can\u2019t rule that out.\u201d<\/p>\n
A risk to one woman, or all<\/p>\n
Counsel to assist the coroner Erin McGill asked if the lawyer not reciprocating Samsudeen\u2019s feelings and the non-association order would have been \u201ctriggers\u201d for the man.<\/p>\n
Goodwin replied \u201cyes\u201d.<\/p>\n
McGill asked the psychiatrist if obsessive behaviour like Samsudeen\u2019s, towards \u201cone woman\u201d, meant a risk to women in general, and he replied that no, the obsession was usually \u201cnarrowed\u201d to one person.<\/p>\n
She asked then if Samsudeen\u2019s stalking meant there was a risk to the general public.<\/p>\n
\u201cGenerally not, with a straightforward stalking case, but this is not a straightforward stalking situation,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n
Underlying misogyny and violence were also affecting Samsudeen at the time that Goodwin said he didn\u2019t know about until after the attack.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt may have been the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back, as it were.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lawyer<\/p>\n
Throughout Goodwin\u2019s testimony, Samsudeen\u2019s former lawyer was sitting at the back of the court.<\/p>\n
At the conclusion of Goodwin\u2019s testimony, Coroner Marcus Elliott addressed her, saying she played a \u201cvery important role\u201d in representing Samsudeen while he was alive.<\/p>\n
Hers was a difficult role to perform \u201cat the best of times\u201d, Coroner Elliott said, and Samsudeen\u2019s actions in that context must have been \u201cprofoundly distressing\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said she had, \u201cin a number of ways\u201d, contributed to the review and inquiry into the man\u2019s death, and that must have taken a lot of courage.<\/p>\n
The lawyer thanked the coroner and left at the break.<\/p>\n
The inquest continues.<\/p>\n
