Red carpet interviews rarely stay predictable when Tom Holland is anywhere nearby, and the ‘Odyssey‘ premiere in New York proved that once again. What started as a standard chat between Jon Bernthal and a reporter turned into one of the night’s most talked-about candid moments, all thanks to Holland’s habit of showing up exactly where he’s least expected.

The two actors have shared a long history well before either of them stepped foot on the set of Christopher Nolan’s sprawling epic. Bernthal and Holland first crossed paths filming ‘Pilgrimage’ back in 2017, a collaboration that famously led to them making each other’s audition tapes, with Bernthal helping Holland land his role as Spider-Man while Holland returned the favor for Bernthal’s audition as the Punisher.

That closeness was on full display at the New York premiere when Holland crashed Bernthal’s interview with Extra reporter Tommy DiDario mid-conversation, turning a routine red carpet chat into a lighthearted, unscripted moment between two old friends. The clip quickly circulated online, with fans delighting in watching Holland casually insert himself into his costar’s interview without missing a beat.

The interruption fit neatly into a night already full of playful callbacks to Bernthal’s career. During the same conversation, Bernthal reflected on the origins of his now iconic catchphrase, tracing it back to his breakout role as Shane on ‘The Walking Dead’. “I think it started in Walking Dead. Because it was sort of in there, and I was like, you know, that makes sense for this guy,” Bernthal shared in a separate interview, explaining how writers have kept working the line into his scripts ever since, including in his new role as Menelaus in ‘The Odyssey’.

That dynamic between Holland and Bernthal extends well beyond inside jokes and interview cameos. Bernthal plays Menelaus, the Spartan king who becomes something of a mentor figure to Holland’s Telemachus in Nolan’s adaptation, giving their real life friendship an unexpectedly fitting parallel within the story itself.

Bernthal has been openly emotional discussing Holland’s growth throughout the film’s press tour, reflecting on watching him mature from a teenager auditioning for Marvel into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. “I know Tom since he was 17. We did our audition tapes together for Spider Man. I could not be more proud of him, to witness him growing up, becoming the man he is, becoming the movie star that he is,” Bernthal told Variety on the red carpet, adding praise for Holland’s relationship with Zendaya and the support the couple shows each other.

The timing of their reunion carries extra weight given how busy both actors are about to become. Beyond sharing the screen in ‘The Odyssey’, Bernthal is set to reprise his role as Frank Castle opposite Holland’s Spider-Man in ‘Spider-Man, Brand New Day’, marking the first time the Punisher and Spider-Man have shared the screen together in live action. Holland has spoken enthusiastically about building that new dynamic, calling it one of his favorite parts of the upcoming film.

Fans reacting to the interview crash online have leaned heavily into the genuine warmth between the two actors, with many pointing out how rare it is to see that level of real friendship translate so naturally on camera. The moment also added to a broader pattern throughout the film’s press tour, where candid, unscripted interactions between cast members have often overshadowed the more polished, planned portions of interviews.

With both ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Spider-Man, Brand New Day’ arriving in theaters within weeks of each other, audiences are about to see a lot more of the Holland and Bernthal pairing, both on screen and, if the New York premiere is any indication, off screen as well.

Was Tom Holland’s red carpet interruption the perfect best friend moment?
