{"id":529055,"date":"2026-07-16T13:36:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T13:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/529055\/"},"modified":"2026-07-16T13:36:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T13:36:13","slug":"whangarei-jury-convicts-audrey-thompson-of-murdering-arthur-tahere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/529055\/","title":{"rendered":"Whang\u0101rei jury convicts Audrey Thompson of murdering Arthur Tahere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">The jury heard evidence that Tahere, 22, of West Auckland, had been in an on-and-off relationship with Kait\u0101ia woman Sunday Howard for a year and a half.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">In March 2024, Howard was pregnant with Tahere\u2019s baby, but they had broken up, and she moved to Kait\u0101ia to be with her sister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Howard ended up staying in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/crime\/witness-describes-moment-partner-was-fatally-stabbed-in-kaitaia-beer-bottle-attack\/XKD2XZP4BRCLBEVRR5LLT3LTHY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/crime\/witness-describes-moment-partner-was-fatally-stabbed-in-kaitaia-beer-bottle-attack\/XKD2XZP4BRCLBEVRR5LLT3LTHY\/\">Kait\u0101ia<\/a> and had their son in July, when Tahere first travelled north to meet him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">The couple reconciled, and Howard told the court the relationship had its normal ups and downs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Howard was good friends with Thompson and would often share with her the challenges of her relationship with Tahere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">On September 7, 2024, Thompson had been at Howard\u2019s home drinking when Tahere arrived before 10pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">At some point, Howard and Tahere began arguing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Howard said she was speaking loudly to Tahere when she noticed Thompson nearby, looking \u201cmacho\u201d, wearing her hoodie and appearing to \u201cstaunch out the situation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Howard was angry by this stage of the evening and believed Tahere wanted to drink rather than spend time with her and their son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">She told him if he wasn\u2019t there to help, he should \u201cf*** off\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Howard told the court Tahere was not angry and told her: \u201cGo inside bro, you\u2019re tired, bro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">But within seconds, Howard heard a bottle smash and saw Thompson use it to stab Tahere\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">It was the defence case that Thompson was acting in self-defence because Tahere was allegedly bouncing around and being aggressive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Defence lawyer David Reece said Tahere and Howard were making threats towards each other, Tahere was standing at the time and Thompson put her arm out because he was in her face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI put it to you, she had the bottle out to defend herself because he was in her face,\u201d Reece suggested to Howard in week one of the trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFalse,\u201d Howard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cShe was holding her arm out as a barrier,\u201d Reece said to Howard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFalse,\u201d she responded.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Justice Natalie Walker allowed daily karakia throughout the three-week trial. Photo \/ NZME<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">The jury retired to consider its verdict on Tuesday afternoon and became stuck on question five of Justice Walker\u2019s question trail part-way through Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/year-of-tragic-cases-ahead-as-whangarei-courts-prepare-for-homicide-trials\/IHGMVOPXMZALLF5BZF2JGEJMEU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/year-of-tragic-cases-ahead-as-whangarei-courts-prepare-for-homicide-trials\/IHGMVOPXMZALLF5BZF2JGEJMEU\/\">Justice Walker<\/a> clarified the question for them, which was split into two parts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cEvidently, you can\u2019t look inside her head at that critical moment to see what she\u2019s thinking. That is why you must draw inferences from facts you find proven,\u201d Justice Walker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">The question was \u201cAre you sure that when Ms Thompson stabbed Mr Tahere in the neck she intended to kill him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">That question was followed by an alternative question: \u201cAre you sure that when Ms Thompson stabbed Mr Tahere in the neck she intended to cause him bodily injury that was more than minor in nature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf you answer yes to 5a or all of the parts of 5b, you must find Ms Thompson guilty of murder,\u201d Justice Walker said to the jury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf you answer no to 5a and to any of the parts of 5b, you must find her not guilty of murder and guilty of manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt is not enough to say \u2018she ought to have known.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">You must be sure that she did know and chose to carry on in the face of that knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">The jury returned its unanimous guilty verdict about 12.30pm today,<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Jurors were thanked for their service before being dismissed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cDetermination of guilt is a significant responsibility; it is not easy to sit in judgment,\u201d Justice Walker told them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI hope you can leave this case behind you and return to your families and be proud of the role you have [played].\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Justice Walker acknowledged the respectful way the wh\u0101nau had conducted themselves throughout the trial, and remanded Thompson in custody ahead of her sentencing in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">She directed restorative justice to take place, and a final karakia was then conducted by members of Thompson and Tahere\u2019s wh\u0101nau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Shannon Pitman is a Whang\u0101rei-based reporter for Open Justice covering courts in the Te Tai Tokerau region.
