According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/emergencies_local\/728966\/te-anau-quake-civil-defence-website-glitch-gotta-be-fixed-mitchell-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">RNZ<\/a>, Southland Mayor Rob Scott confirmed the region had escaped relatively unscathed: \u201cI\u2019ve heard so far that everyone is OK, and there\u2019s been a little bit of damage to some of the properties in terms of cracking in houses and the like.\u201d Fiordland Community Board chairwoman Diane Holmes told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2026\/07\/17\/boom-everything-started-moving-te-anau-resident-on-quake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1News<\/a> she had lodged an insurance claim after counting cracks throughout her home. \u201cWe were just sitting on the couch watching The Rookie when Phil said, \u2018I think there\u2019s a quake coming\u2019 \u2013 then boom, everything started moving,\u201d she said, adding the earthquake had dominated conversation across Te Anau: \u201cEverywhere you go, that\u2019s all anybody wants to talk about \u2013 where they were, what they felt, [and] whether they\u2019ve got cracks in their walls.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Residential damage moved directly into the claims system.
