When a duo of young lovers sit together at a piano bench to write a song, you might expect it to end up being a basic love song. But that\u2019s not the case for two sad sacks (complimentary) like Gracie Abrams and Paul Mescal<\/a>. On her new album, Daughter From Hell, out now, Abrams co-wrote one song with her boyfriend called \u201cImaginary Friend,\u201d and it\u2019s just as morose as the rest of Abrams\u2019s catalogue. \u201cI felt you in the morning in the kitchen \/ And it spooked me \u2018cause you weren\u2019t there,\u201d Abrams sings as the song opens. And suddenly, the listener realizes that she may have co-written a song with her current boyfriend about the specter of an ex.<\/p>\n Whether or not the song is about an ex, it\u2019s certainly about someone in Abrams\u2019s life who is no longer around anymore. \u201cYou don\u2019t know even half of what you\u2019re missin\u2019,\u201d Abrams sings on the second verse. \u201cI\u2019m cool now if you even care.\u201d As she continues to sing, it seems like she\u2019s talking to someone whom she wants to get back together with because she made a mistake before. \u201cPromise not to laugh, I got it wrong,\u201d she wails. \u201cLet\u2019s run it back \/ Don\u2019t be a figment of my imagination \/ But you are, and I fucking hate it.\u201d Overall, it\u2019s a pretty emotionally masochistic song to imagine writing with your partner, but these are the people who wrote \u201cCamden\u201d and starred in Aftersun, respectively. Sadness is their specialty.<\/p>\n Abrams, for what it\u2019s worth, didn\u2019t set out to expressly write a song with Mescal. She told Popcast<\/a> that she realized one day while with Mescal that she didn\u2019t have many \u201cstrummers\u201d on the album, so they just sat down to remedy that. \u201cThat wasn\u2019t some groundbreaking event for us,\u201d she added. \u201cWe have a very creative home, with friends who are so good at what they do. Everyone feels happy to share that with one another.\u201d They ended up just sitting down and \u201ctrading lines\u201d back and forth.
