His speech started on a more jovial note, referencing NZ Herald political correspondent Audrey Young\u2019s recent observation that the election was becoming focused on celebrity candidates. <\/p>\n
Noting Act recently announced Paul Henry as a candidate, Jones mocked the broadcaster\u2019s appreciation of nudism. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe thought of Paul Henry, the secret weapon of the Act Party, turning up and creating a small naked colony on the backbench brings a whole new meaning to the expression \u2018Point of Order\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jones then pointed to the party\u2019s own \u201ccelebrity\u201d candidates, describing former broadcaster and new candidate Michael Laws as \u201cour celebrity wizard Gandalf\u201d. <\/p>\n
Of former Labour minister-turned-NZ First candidate Stuart Nash, Jones described him as the \u201cformer Parliamentary gym bunny\u201d and joked again about Henry in the nude. <\/p>\n
\u201cStuey, in the event that you encounter the exhibitionist at the gymnasium, keep your distance.\u201d<\/p>\n
He later took the mickey out of Nash, who had previously dyed his hair. <\/p>\n
However, it was his own appearance which he saved the greatest jibes for. He said he had been told to go on a diet.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs you can see, the diet hasn\u2019t really worked.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jones said he had been convinced to use medicine to help drop weight, indicating he had used the weight-loss drug Wegovy. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve got to tell you, in Parliament, it\u2019s not only verbal jabbing that\u2019s been happening.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey introduced me to Wegovy. [They said], \u2018Shane, it\u2019s been proven \u2026 see if that can help you lose a little bit of weight, get rid of the double chin and be a bit more sporting-like\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cI soon discovered that I\u2019m one of those few males upon encountering Wegovy, you develop an odour in your breath not far from a septic tank.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd then one daughter says to me, \u2018That shouldn\u2019t be a problem, Papa, because according to the Opposition members in Parliament, most of your content flowing out of your mouth has a septic quality to it anyway\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jones ended his speech by taking a swing at National Party campaign chairman Simeon Brown, who recently criticised NZ First and Act members for behaving like children. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the campaign manager of the National Party described the 66-year-old Dalmatian M\u0101ori from Kait\u0101ia as a child.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll I wanted to say is, \u2018Son, you\u2019ve been running the National re-election campaign for 10 weeks, approximately. Your polling is 28%, similar to your age.\u201d<\/p>\n
