Photos \/ NZME<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">While Health NZ had 71 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/health-new-zealand-announces-25m-for-hospitals-more-beds-and-staff-as-winter-looms\/5HQNLV4NNZHQLFMLBBDZCPODME\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/health-new-zealand-announces-25m-for-hospitals-more-beds-and-staff-as-winter-looms\/5HQNLV4NNZHQLFMLBBDZCPODME\/\">extra hospital beds nationwide for winter<\/a>, Thorn said, at Whang\u0101rei that meant more beds in the corridor between the ED and the intensive care unit (ICU).<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">She said there was little space for Whang\u0101rei ED to expand until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/budget-2026-northland-wins-funding-for-hospital-ward-tower-highway-progression\/CP7GNMMVMZFRXALZC67JPQMM4I\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/budget-2026-northland-wins-funding-for-hospital-ward-tower-highway-progression\/CP7GNMMVMZFRXALZC67JPQMM4I\/\">the new hospital was built<\/a>, but hiring more clinical staff would help reduce pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Health NZ\u2019s group director of operations for Te Tai Tokerau, Alex Pimm, said patient safety remained the highest priority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAll patients presenting to the ED are clinically assessed and prioritised according to the urgency of their condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPatients in the waiting room are regularly reassessed, and there are processes in place to identify any deterioration whilst they are waiting for further review or their treatment plan to commence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"A nurse says Health NZ's extra winter hospital beds means more Whang\u0101rei patients are put in corridors, but Health NZ says they are treated safely. Photo \/ NZME<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Pimm said that on forecast high-demand days, a doctor and nurse were dedicated to the waiting room and Health NZ was recruiting to expand this model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">He said additional spaces in ED and the hospital were used to safely care for patients \u201cduring periods of exceptional demand\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe would like to thank our ED team \u2013 we are incredibly proud of their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to delivering excellent care for our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Pimm said while demand and capacity fluctuated throughout the day at Whang\u0101rei ED, performance and waiting times over the long weekend and on Monday remained strong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">On Monday, 83% of patients were admitted, discharged, or transferred within six hours, with an average wait of 4.5 hours, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">While the target was for 95% of patients to be seen within six hours, Northland was among the four best-performing areas last quarter.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Health NZ Te Tai Tokerau group director of operations Alex Pimm says Whang\u0101rei Hospital ED has a strong response to high demand. Photo \/ Denise Piper<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Pimm said the higher presentation volumes seen on Sunday and Monday were consistent with what was expected following a public holiday weekend and ongoing winter demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAcross the country we actively manage pressure, and people should continue to expect that if they need urgent care, they will be seen and treated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPatients are prioritised based on clinical need, so those who are most unwell are always seen first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Pimm said Health NZ makes a winter plan each year because it knows demand in emergency departments increases, particularly with respiratory illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis year we\u2019re focusing on improving patient flow through the hospital, supporting our workforce, and making sure patients are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/whangarei-hospital-patient-starved-16-hours-a-day-for-six-days-awaiting-surgery\/NHQZH4HYQZGBZBPLYWZQXUQ2AU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/whangarei-hospital-patient-starved-16-hours-a-day-for-six-days-awaiting-surgery\/NHQZH4HYQZGBZBPLYWZQXUQ2AU\/\">seen and treated as quickly as possible<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Nationally, 378 fulltime equivalent roles were introduced for the winter plan, with 85% filled and recruitment ongoing for the rest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">In Te Tai Tokerau, winter measures included more weekday nursing at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/whangarei-hospitals-ed-at-capacity-a-symptom-of-distressed-healthcare-system\/GAQRDTLBMZQ46EUFOMAU3ETTEU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/whangarei-hospitals-ed-at-capacity-a-symptom-of-distressed-healthcare-system\/GAQRDTLBMZQ46EUFOMAU3ETTEU\/\">front of the ED to better manage busy periods<\/a> and introducing an after-hours clinical nurse co-ordinator to strengthen leadership and decision-making.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Other measures included using porters to transfer patients into wards more quickly and artificial intelligence (AI) tools in EDs to give clinicians more time with patients, Pimm said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Dargaville had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/weve-lost-our-hospital-outrage-over-health-nz-changes-in-northland\/LRHJY3EI4VE2HKNVHJ6O6SMCMU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/weve-lost-our-hospital-outrage-over-health-nz-changes-in-northland\/LRHJY3EI4VE2HKNVHJ6O6SMCMU\/\">extended urgent care access<\/a>, and there were plans to extend the opening hours at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/budget-2025-northland-gets-healthcare-boost-with-improved-247-urgent-care-services\/SFAKLDSEE5HB7GRAZJ3TRLUG74\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/budget-2025-northland-gets-healthcare-boost-with-improved-247-urgent-care-services\/SFAKLDSEE5HB7GRAZJ3TRLUG74\/\">Whang\u0101rei\u2019s urgent care clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">Pimm said that where suitable, Whang\u0101rei ED patients with less severe health needs were offered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/whangarei-hospital-spends-100k-sending-ed-patients-to-private-clinic\/BK6HOM3J6FDU5JDTXQXFTD67KE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/whangarei-hospital-spends-100k-sending-ed-patients-to-private-clinic\/BK6HOM3J6FDU5JDTXQXFTD67KE\/\">option of a White Cross voucher<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis allows patients to access care in the community and often be seen sooner, while helping preserve ED capacity for those requiring emergency care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uXGlmRGscvPe\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/author\/denise-piper\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denise Piper is a news reporter<\/a> for the Northern Advocate, focusing on health and business.
