The Canadian government said Sunday \u200bit would deny entry to any foreigner who has been \u200cto the Democratic Republic of the Congo within the past 21 days as part of new, temporary border measures to combat the spread of Ebola.<\/p>\n

The ban contravenes advice from the World \u200bHealth Organization, which advises against travel or trade restrictions with \u200bCongo, where officials are currently struggling to contain a large \u2060outbreak of Ebola. The U.N. health agency says travel restrictions create \u200bstigma and can make epidemics harder to control.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople from affected regions and \u200bAfrican communities have faced unfair suspicion,\u201d WHO said in a statement last month. \u201cThe spread of Ebola is not determined by nationality or ethnicity.\u201d<\/p>\n
WHO estimates that the \u200brisk of Congo\u2019s Ebola outbreak spreading internationally is low.<\/p>\n
In a statement \u200bon Sunday, Canada\u2019s Public Health Agency said \u201climiting entry of foreign nationals who have been \u200cin [Congo] \u2060in the previous 21 days may reduce public health risks for Canadians.\u201d<\/p>\n
The measures take effect on Monday, July 20, at 11:59 p.m., the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a statement. The agency \u200bdid not immediately \u200brespond to a \u2060request for comment.<\/p>\n
Ebola is mostly spread through direct contact with the bodily fluids of someone infected with \u200bthe disease. As of July 15, Congo had reported \u200bmore than \u20602,100 Ebola cases including 828 deaths.<\/p>\n
Last week, the U.S. introduced measures preventing Americans who had been in Congo in the previous 21 days from entering \u2060the \u200bU.S. via commercial aviation.
