Madeleine’s disappearance has since become one of the world’s most high-profile missing persons cases, with countless documentaries and speculation around it. A UK police investigation has remained open since 2011. Nobody has been charged over her disappearance, and she was never found.

Sean previously represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2023, finishing fifth in the 400 metre freestyle and seventh in the 1500 metre freestyle.

In a video posted to Loughborough University Swimming’s Instagram page, Sean explained how he got into swimming.

“When I was eight, my mum [Kate McCann] took me to Loughborough Town [swimming club] and I hated it at first, didn’t want to go, but after a while, it grew on me and I’m still here now.”

He is eligible to represent Scotland through his Glasgow-born father Gerry.
