\n\tThe typically reclusive Key Glock<\/a> sports an infectious grin during his playback at the Billboard NYC office weeks ahead of PROJECT X\u2018s arrival. <\/p>\n

\n\tSomething\u2019s different this time around. For one, Glock was moving around his favorite cities \u2014 he recorded the album during stays in Miami, Los Angeles, Houston and Atlanta \u2014 which supplied the motivation and party energy feeding the project. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn PROJECT X\u2018s lead-up, the 28-year-old\u2019s been more open to letting people into his life, whether that be his The Road to Project X Vlogs or testing out new sounds at clubs like Booby Trap in Miami.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA lot of clubs and strip clubs help me with the tracklisting and they don\u2019t even know it. I was playing unreleased songs before Project X came out,\u201d Glock tells Billboard. \u201cI was giving it to certain DJs in cities when I was in the club and looking at the people\u2019s reaction to it. That helped me pick like, \u2018Oh, this song is one of the ones.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen you name an album after the 2012 movie that taught a generation of millennials what the best party in the world looked like, there better be a soundtrack that mimics the emotions tied to euphoric bliss, tapped kegs and sweaty basements. <\/p>\n

\n\tGlizzock leaned on frequent collaborators like King Wonka, Honorable C.N.O.T.E. and Tay Keith, who supplied their trunk-rattling production to Glock\u2019s lavish flexes and hedonistic escapades. <\/p>\n

\n\tUnfortunately, Tay Keith passed away<\/a> on June 18, just hours before PROJECT X hit streaming services. Still mourning the loss of his close friend, Glock understandably wasn\u2019t ready to discuss the loss of the Memphis-bred hitmaker with Billboard.<\/p>\n

\n\tPROJECT X arrived as a solo endeavor free of features on June 19 and debuted at No. 29 on the Billboard 200<\/a>, giving the Memphis rapper another top 10 on the Top Rap Albums <\/a>chart.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs far as what\u2019s ahead, he\u2019s already working on his next album. While there won\u2019t be a deluxe edition, Glock says there will end up being a PROJECT X sequel down the line. Check out the rest of our interview with the Paper Route Empire boss below. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen you came by the Billboard office last month, you seemed to be in really good spirits. How do you sum up the Project X era compared to your previous work?<\/p>\n

\n\tThis one was more fun and a more lenient stage, I would say. I\u2019m definitely more outside and I\u2019ve been more social. That\u2019s the biggest thing. <\/p>\n

\n\tHow does that leak into the studio? Does any specific recording story come to mind?<\/p>\n

\n\tSometimes it starts in the studio and then we\u2019ll take it to the club, and then we\u2019ll bring it right back to the studio. From the \u201cGo\u201d video, that wasn\u2019t a skit. That actually happened. The homeowner came and tried to kick us out. We had to tell him, \u201cIt\u2019s not what you think it is. You\u2019re welcome to come in; it\u2019s your house. Just have fun.\u201d That\u2019s legit.<\/p>\n

\n\tHow was it letting people more into your life with The Road to Project X vlogs<\/a>?<\/p>\n

\n\tThey was just as excited as I was because they know people don\u2019t see this side of me either. It was just all hitting. I always feel the love from the [fans] through the internet.<\/p>\n

\n\tSo you\u2019ll check what publications and the fans are saying?<\/p>\n

\n\tYeah, I did that for sure in my spare time. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhat does Project X mean to you?<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s an actual project and it came from a collab. We decided we wasn\u2019t going to do the collab during that time, so I just shifted over to Project X. I couldn\u2019t come up with a name, so \u201cX\u201d can mean anything. There will be a sequel.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat did you think about the Project X movie from 2012? I saw you post a picture with one of the security guards <\/a>from that.<\/p>\n

\n\tThey act exactly how they act in the movie. It was a cool, funny experience. Everybody was satisfied and f\u2013king with it. I was in school when that s\u2013t came out. It was a party I always wanted to go to once I saw that movie.<\/p>\n

\n\tDid you get to experience anything close to that?<\/p>\n

\n\tYeah, one of my parties. Like a recent one that I\u2019m throwing now. I just don\u2019t have any footage, but it goes off. <\/p>\n

\n\tYou were exploring more southern rap sounds on this album. What was inspiring you? You named a song after Mannie Fresh and there\u2019s some Gucci Mane homage.<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was what was going on at the studio at the time. \u201cMannie Fresh,\u201d they actually kept telling me, \u201cMan, you fresh. You got it on today.\u201d I took it as, \u201cMan, he fresh.\u201d But when you say it fast it sounds like, Mannie Fresh. He made a song called \u201cGet Your Roll on.\u201d Another term for high is rollin\u2019, so that\u2019s why I used that.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat do you think is missing from the rap game right now?<\/p>\n

\n\tAuthenticity. Nothing\u2019s organic anymore. It\u2019s very rare that you come across something that\u2019s organically catching everybody without being forced on everyone or pushed into our face. <\/p>\n

\n\tYou think it\u2019s like WWE out here?<\/p>\n

\n\tThe rap game [has] all kinds of rap wrestlers out here. <\/p>\n

\n\tHave you added to your car collection?<\/p>\n

\n\tI just ordered the Ram Rumble Bee. They just started making them. They ain\u2019t even dropped yet. It\u2019s really like a street racing car, but in the form of a pickup truck. Only if you understand cars you\u2019ll get it. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen you came by the office, you said your next project was gonna have a bunch of features. Is that the plan? Who do you want to get on there?<\/p>\n

\n\tMaybe not a bunch, but we\u2019ll have some. Something different \u2014 Tyler, the Creator. <\/p>\n

\n\tI saw a track that leaked<\/a> from like five years ago that you did with Don Toliver. Do you remember anything about that session?<\/p>\n

\n\tYeah, we did like three or four songs that day in Houston. I told him the other day that I love to see [his growth]. <\/p>\n

\n\tCould we see you acting in the future?<\/p>\n

\n\tYeah, I\u2019m getting into that right now. I don\u2019t want to give too much out on that. Both [TV and movies]. <\/p>\n
