The Night Manager star Tom Hiddleston has shared an “exciting” update on season three following the bleak season two finale<\/a>. The hit spy thriller finally returned for a second run earlier this year, a decade after the first’s release.<\/p>\n

However, the latest episode ended on a rather grim note, with both Diego Calva’s Teddy Dos Santos (Richard Roper’s son) and Olivia Colman’s Angela Burr killed off, while Hiddleston’s Jonathan Pine is left in a bloody situation.<\/p>\n

The show already has a third season on the way, which was confirmed at the same time as the second<\/a>, and Hiddleston has teased that discussions on the next episodes are “very alive right now” and “very connected to the conversation about our lives right now and the direction of travel in the UK”.<\/p>\n

“As we know from the ending of season 2, Jonathan Pine finds himself in a tight spot… wait and see, it’s exciting stuff,” he added to the Radio Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He further shared: “I can tell you it’s coming along. It’s one of the most profound and significant pieces of work in my acting life. I’m so grateful to The Ink Factory for including me in the journey of generating the material now as we imagine how to develop the story further.”<\/p>\n

Hiddleston further praised The Night Manager’s “contemporary” story, saying that Pine is one of his “favourite characters [he’s] ever played”.<\/p>\n

“Here we are talking about the ancient world, but [author John] Le Carr\u00e9 was so rigorous in his examination of the modern world,” he explained.<\/p>\n

“I think the way he used his chosen form of the espionage thriller is a way of examining who we are, and certainly who we are in the UK. If spies are patrolling the boundaries of our freedoms to protect them, if they’re doing it for the flag, if they’re doing it for the country, what is the country they’re representing?”<\/p>\n

Show creator David Farr recently said he feels “the deep weight of doom of stress”<\/a> about season three, especially as he “has to actually do the writing of the damn thing”.<\/p>\n

“It’s a huge challenge. It’ll be very exciting. And it won’t take as long as the last one, I promise,” he added at Deadline<\/a>‘s Contenders TV panel.<\/p>\n
