{"id":539381,"date":"2026-07-22T23:03:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T23:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/539381\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T23:03:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T23:03:13","slug":"whanganui-district-council-explores-airport-solar-project-to-lower-power-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/539381\/","title":{"rendered":"Whanganui District Council explores airport solar project to lower power bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">Gasnet said the site would be \u201cgood for around 4MW [megawatts]\u201d and that a connection to the Powerco network should not be a problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">Gasnet is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/whanganui-chronicle\/news\/whanganui-holdings-scrapped-pilot-academy-airport-gas-company-and-port-now-reporting-directly-to-council\/ZYIPEZCE5JDQBCVMZMC65P2JIE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/whanganui-chronicle\/news\/whanganui-holdings-scrapped-pilot-academy-airport-gas-company-and-port-now-reporting-directly-to-council\/ZYIPEZCE5JDQBCVMZMC65P2JIE\/\">a council-controlled organisation (CCO)<\/a> that operates a natural gas network and metering business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">At a CCO and economic development committee meeting on Tuesday, Gasnet chief executive Michael Ram said the electricity generated would offset council usage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">He said iwi had been approached about the project, \u201cto make sure there are no issues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe know there are a couple of sensitive pieces of land bordering that piece of land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m not seeing any barriers at the moment, but we\u2018re waiting to talk to the parties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">Ram said a business case would be brought back to the council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">The Gasnet report said there should be no problem with solar panel glint and glare for aviation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">Panels would be in a similar location to those at Gisborne Airport, it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">In 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/gisborne-herald\/news\/ceremony-marks-start-of-historic-solar-farm-initiative\/EB34BD4VZNHTRMZNSX6P5K2LNE\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/gisborne-herald\/news\/ceremony-marks-start-of-historic-solar-farm-initiative\/EB34BD4VZNHTRMZNSX6P5K2LNE\/\">a 5.2-megawatt solar farm, Te Ihi o te Ra,<\/a> became operational in Gisborne, with around 8000 bi-facial solar panels covering 6.1ha.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Whanganui Mayor Andrew Tripe. Photo \/ NZME<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">Whanganui Mayor Andrew Tripe told the Chronicle electricity was one of the council\u2019s biggest costs, and household bills had risen significantly in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">He said he had encouraged Gasnet to explore solar options,  and work had so far been funded from the company\u2019s budget. <\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI think the concept has some real legs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf the business case delivers, then it\u2019s something we can expand upon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe need to think more broadly about energy security for Whanganui.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">At the meeting, Deputy Mayor Michael Law said he was \u201csuper excited\u201d about the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">In 2023, Law<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/whanganui-chronicle\/news\/power-from-the-people-whanganui-district-councillor-proposes-leasing-roofs-for-large-scale-solar-plan\/2KLUIH2N3JD5RBH246JUK7D3MA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/whanganui-chronicle\/news\/power-from-the-people-whanganui-district-councillor-proposes-leasing-roofs-for-large-scale-solar-plan\/2KLUIH2N3JD5RBH246JUK7D3MA\/\" target=\"_blank\"> proposed Solarnet<\/a>, a council-run company that would install solar panels on people\u2019s roofs in exchange for a rates rebate, but the initiative did not make the council\u2019s 2024-34 long-term plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI hope the numbers make sense and I look forward to hearing how many gigawatt hours we can actually produce,\u201d he told committee members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIn my estimations, it could be [enough electricity] for 750 households.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to seeing it, proving it, and showcasing to the rest of Whanganui how much utilisation we could have of solar, and be profitable as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">Speaking to the Chronicle, Tripe said the council would continue to do the basics, but it had to think about the future as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBuilding capability, technology and energy will always be there, they\u2019re never going to go away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe need to face into that space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"lRosKcBdZHd\" style=\"display:none\">Mike Tweed is a multimedia journalist at the Whanganui Chronicle.
