Australians taking weight-loss\u00a0drugs\u00a0including Ozempic and Mounjaro\u00a0are warned to\u00a0monitor\u00a0their\u00a0vision\u00a0amid fears surrounding a “severe” eye condition.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has linked GLP-1-class diabetes medicines\u00a0to a rare but severe eye disorder\u00a0\u2013 non-arteritic anterior\u00a0ischaemic\u00a0optic neuropathy (NAION).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The disorder can cause permanent vision loss and,\u00a0occasionally, blindness.<\/p>\n
No treatment has been shown to improve symptoms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Medicines sold under the names Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Trulicity and Saxenda are GLP-1 RAs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“If you or someone you care for is using one of the GLP-1 RA medicines listed above, you should be alert to any sign of vision loss,” the TGA wrote on Thursday,\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“If any changes are noted, stop using the medicine and seek prompt medical attention.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Health professionals were also warned to be alert to the new class-wide warnings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Advise patients to seek urgent medical attention if they experience sudden vision loss, including\u00a0partial\u00a0loss of vision,” they were instructed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The medicines were originally developed to treat type-2 diabetes, mimicking a\u00a0naturally occurring\u00a0hormone which stimulates the release of insulin and\u00a0suppresses\u00a0glucagon production.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
